  • Patent number: 6189416
Abstract: A stud bolt tool and method for using the stud bolt tool to install or remove a threaded stud bolt from a threaded blind bore. The stud bolt tool has a cylindrical housing having a first and second surface and an internally threaded bore communicating with the first and second surfaces. The housing includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced ports surrounding the internally threaded bore. The ports communicate with the first and second surfaces of the cylindrical housing and each port has a threaded portion extending to the second surface. A plurality of balls are slidably stacked in each port. The ball nearest the first surface is capable of partially protruding beyond the first surface and is also capable of retracting within the port below the first housing surface. A screw threadably engages each threaded portion of each port. Advancement of the screw into the port forces the ball to partially protrude beyond the first surface.

  • Patent number: 6018620
Abstract: Double buffering operations to reduce host bus hold times when an expansion bus master is accessing the main memory on a host bus of a computer system. A system data buffer coupled between the main memory and the expansion bus includes 256-bit double read and write buffers. A memory controller coupled to the double read and write buffers and to the expansion bus includes primary and secondary address latches corresponding to the double buffers. The memory controller detects access to the main memory, compares the expansion bus address with the primary and secondary addresses and controls the double read and write buffers and the primary and secondary address latches accordingly. During write operations, data to be written to the same line of memory is written to a first of the double write buffers until a write occurs to an address to a different line before data is transferred to main memory.

  • Patent number: 5927222
Abstract: A pollution control system to control pollutants in water surrounding a drydock includes a housing extending from each end of the drydock wing walls about the perimeter of the drydock so as to completely encircle an inboard deck of the drydock. The drydock moves between a floating position to a submerged position upon filling drydock buoyancy tanks with water. The housing includes a slot to allow positioning of a removable screen in an opening in the top of the housing. The screens allow the water to flow to and from the deck, as the deck moves between the floating position and the submerged position. A baffle plate is positioned inboard of the housing on the drydock deck to inhibit movement of pollutants between the baffle plate and the housing. Advantageously, a process for reducing pollutants in water surrounding a drydock includes removal of the screen from the housing to protect it from ultraviolet effects or from welding operations during maintenance and repair of a drydocked vessel.

  • Patent number: 5847012
Abstract: Highly uniform microporous foam suitable for medical applications and methods for preparing these foams. The highly uniform microporous foams are of controlled pore size that may be utilized in a variety of applications. In preparing the foams, an organic crystalline polymer is melted and combined with a selected solid crystalline fugitive compound to produce a substantially isotropic solution. The solution is cooled under controlled conditions, which foster solid--solid phase separation by the simultaneous crystallization of the fugitive compound and the polymer, to produce a foam precursor containing the solidified fugitive compound dispersed through a matrix of the organic polymer. Crystals of fugitive compound are then removed by solvent extraction and/or sublimation, or like process to produce microcellular foams having a continuous, open-cell structure.

  • Patent number: 5826586
Abstract: Many medical implants have roughened surfaces that promote cell, bone or tissue adhesion as well as the adhesion of bone cement, for better affixing of the implants in the body. The roughened surfaces should be free of particulates, such as commonly arise from the blasting of implant surfaces with particulates to produce a desired surface finish. A method of producing implants with implant surfaces free of such particulates is to blast the implant surface with a biocompatible liquid, such as water, under high pressure. Under certain circumstances, a solvent may contain particulates that assist in producing the roughened surface, and the particulates are dissolved, sublimated or vaporized from the implant surface, leaving no particulate residue.

  • Patent number: 5822584
Abstract: A new and improved apparatus and method for rebuilding a replacement disk of a fault tolerant, mass storage drive array subsystem of a computer system. The method calls for a microprocessor to check a stripe for consistency. If the stripe is inconsistent, the microprocessor rebuilds a predetermined number of stripes. If the checked stripe is consistent, then the microprocessor checks a next stripe and repeats the above-described process. Because the drive array subsystem receives both system requests and rebuild requests, the present invention allows a user to select the drive array subsystem's priority in processing system requests versus rebuild requests, thereby allowing greater system access to the drive array subsystem during peak times of system requests.

  • Patent number: 5822756
Abstract: In a microcomputer system using a multiple-way cache memory subsystem, the way of the next microprocessor operation is predicted, and either the output enables of the cache are predriven, or, in a single-bank multiple-way cache, the address bit which acts as a way selection is appropriately set. The way prediction used is based not on the address being accessed in the cache, but instead on the last processor code read, or the last processor code or data read. This permits the cache memory subsystem to respond more quickly on hits to the appropriate way, and also allows for slower cache memories to be used without reducing performance.
