Patents Assigned to Onan Corporation
  • Patent number: 4836167
Abstract: An engine/governor friction damper mechanism provides for a method of reducing hunting and searching in a governor controlled engine/generator set. The preferred method comprises a modification in a conventional arrangement utilizing a governor rod and pivotal connection with a crank arm on a throttle control assembly. Friction to pivotal movement of the governor rod with respect to the crank arm is provided by means of a spring-loaded friction washer member arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4835405
Abstract: A generator set including an internal combustion engine which drives an alternator or generator to generate electricity. The engine and the generator are air cooled by air driven by a fan along two parallel air cooling circuits through the generator set. The components of the set are enclosed in a two-piece housing or enclosure having two openings, an air inlet and an air outlet.

  • Patent number: 4812266
Abstract: Carburetor altitude compensator apparatus (20) includes fingertip adjustable fuel to air mixture adjustment screw (22). The adjustment screw (22) includes a tracking member (30) rotatable therewith and cooperating with a graduated scale (42) to indicate the altitude at which optimum fuel/air mixture is derived for any given setting of the adjustment screw (22). An indentation (34) cooperates with the tracking member (30) to limit the range of possible adjustment of the adjustment screw (22) so as to avoid engine damage regardless of what adjustment the adjustment screw (22) is set at.

  • Patent number: 4793309
Abstract: A method of damping governor over compensation and searching is an engine/generator set comprises the provision of an eddy current damper in association with a governor member of the system. The preferred eddy current damper comprises a governor arm having an eddy current plate on one end thereof, the plate being oriented to move through a magnetic field generated by an industrial magnet mounted on the engine/generator set. As the governor arm moves in response to changes in engine speed the eddy current plate is passed through the magnetic field, the generated eddy current causing resistance to motion and a damping effect. Through a conventional linkage mechanism, the damping effect is translated to control of the engine throttle. As a result, over-compensation is generally reduced and/or searching is inhibited.

  • Patent number: 4792713
Abstract: A lamination stack assembly comprising elongated, resilient spring pin members for exerting radially outward force when in deformed states, each laminate having an inner edge defining an opening for receiving the shaft. The spring pin members are disposed axially along the shaft intermediate of its outer surface and the inner edge of the laminates, and cooperate with the shaft and the inner edges of the laminates to prevent relative rotational slippage of the laminates with respect to the shaft. The shaft preferably includes axially extending grooves for receiving the spring pin members which cooperate with notches in an inner edge of each of the laminates to receive the spring pin members. Each of the spring pin members preferably includes a hollow cylinder having an exterior wall defining an axially extending gap in the wall, wherein the gap varies in width from a normal state to a deformed state. Preferably, the spring pin members are made of hardened steel.

  • Patent number: 4653442
Abstract: An engine starting cycle cranking and rest period timing circuit and an overcrank shut down circuit includes a 24 stage frequency divider connected to starting motor relays, and an engine starter disconnect circuit and a start signal circuit functioning to provide a predetermined number of engine starter motor cranking periods followed by rest periods. The frequency divider circuit is connected to provide coordination of the starter motor cranking cycle with an overcrank signal generated by the frequency divider. An overcrank signal will activate only when all three output terminals of the frequency divider circuit are simultaneously of the same signal amplitude which will always occur at the predetermined maximum number of crank periods.

  • Patent number: 4625123
Abstract: An assembly for stabilizing engine operation in an engine-generator set includes a fuel supply and fuel lines to first and second banks of engine cylinders. A fuel valve is positioned in the fuel line to the first bank of cylinders and is controlled by a normally open switch and a normally closed switch. In the closed position of the fuel valve the cylinders in the first bank act as a load on the cylinders in the second bank. The assembly includes a voltage sensor for sensing voltage generated by the engine-generator set. Once voltage exceeds a predetermined level, the sensor terminates fuel flow to the first bank. The assembly also includes a load sensor for sensing load imposed on the engine-generator set. Once the load increases above a first predetermined level, the load sensor allows flow of fuel to the first bank of cylinders and all cylinders are working.
