  • Patent number: 7461377
Abstract: A method for dynamically managing printers comprises a mechanism for printing from a network of printers that belong to a virtual printer group to meet the user's request for printing. The invention does this by requesting an options and capabilities file from each printer and then generating a virtual printer group, such that when a user wants to print a file, the invention looks for the best suited printer for the user and sends a file to that printer for printing. The invention has the capability to keep track of each printer's printing capabilities dynamically and to communicate to the user about the status of printing and printer location, and of informing a system administrator for manual intervention should the need arise.

  • Patent number: 7133833
Abstract: A lightweight directory access protocol workflow management system. The invention converts a logical process into a reusable Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory representation. The directory representation is a hierarchical tree structure where each process element in the process is represented as an LDAP directory entry and is assigned a unique distinguished name and is stored in a Directory Server database or filesystem. The tree structure of the LDAP representation allows the sharing of LDAP trees or subtrees among users. The LDAP trees and subtrees can be remotely located and distributed among different LDAP servers. Another preferred embodiment of the invention provides a graphical user interface for creating a Workflow process definition which is comprised of process elements: activities; actions; and entry/exit points. The user constructs a Workflow process using the process elements, logically interrelating each activity.

  • Patent number: 6836651
Abstract: A portable cellular phone system is provided, wherein matched sets of algorithmically generated communication units are generated, each defining an increment of authorized communication. One set is stored on a system server, i.e. a service provider, and the pre-paid set is available for use within a portable cellular phone. The portable cellular phone, which is normally non-activated, automatically contacts the system server upon selective activation by the user, to initiate a call (outgoing or incoming). A voice recognition system allows the user to place calls and/or receive calls. During a call, the portable cellular phone and the system server allow authorized access to communication, while the communication units are decremented at the system server and at the portable cellular phone.

  • Patent number: 6826525
Abstract: A method for detecting a transient in a discrete-time audio signal is performed completely in the time domain and includes the step of segmenting the discrete-time audio signal so as to generate consecutive segments of the same length with unfiltered discrete-time audio signals xs(T−1). The discrete-time audio signal in a current segment is subsequently filtered. Then either the energy of the filtered discrete-time audio signal in the current segment can be compared with the energy of the filtered discrete-time audio signal in a preceding segment or a current relationship between the energy of the filtered discrete-time audio signal in the current segment and the energy of the unfiltered discrete-time audio signal in the current segment can be formed and this current relationship compared with a preceding corresponding relationship. On the basis of the one and/or the other of these comparisons it is detected whether a transient is present in the discrete-time audio signal.

  • Patent number: 6818904
Abstract: An ultraviolet radiation sensor that indicates a predetermined cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation is disclosed. The presently preferred sensor comprises a membrane, a base, an ultraviolet degradable adhesive, and an indicating mechanism. The ultraviolet degradable adhesive adheres a portion of the membrane to the base, thereby maintaining the membrane in a biased state. The ultraviolet degradable adhesive fails when a predetermined cumulative exposure has been attained. Upon failure of the adhesive, the membrane reflexively restores itself to an unbiased state and activates the indicating mechanism. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the sensor is worn by a user to indicate when the skin of the user has been exposed to excessive ultraviolet radiation.

  • Patent number: 6816241
Abstract: A compact, lightweight instrument for non-invasive blood analyte determination employs a light source incorporating an assembly of LED's interconnected within a thermally stable substrate. A large diameter mixer couples the signal to a fiber optic probe for delivering the signal to a tissue measurement site. Back-diffused light is collected and dispersed across an array of photo detectors in a miniature spectrometer instrument. A high-speed DSP executes an algorithm for predicting concentration of a target analyte, which is output to a LCD display. Instrument control is by means of keypad or voice recognition. High conversion efficiency of the light source results in extremely low power dissipation and virtually no heat generation, making incorporation of the light source and the spectrometer into a single unit practicable. High-speed pulsing of the signal allows application of high-sensitivity, synchronous detection techniques.

  • Patent number: 6801190
Abstract: A text entry system uses word-level analysis to automatically correct inaccuracies in user keystroke entries. The system determines one or more alternative textual interpretations of each sequence of inputs detected within an auto-correcting keyboard region. The actual contract locations for the keystrokes may occur outside the boundaries of the specific keyboard key regions associated with the actual characters of the word interpretations proposed for selection, where the distance from each contact location to each corresponding intended character may increase with the expected frequency of the intended word in the language or in a particular context. Each such sequence corresponds to a complete word, and the user can easily select the intended word from among the generated interpretations. Once the user selects the desired string, it is automatically accepted for output and the next input detected starts a new input sequence corresponding to the entry of a next word.
