Abstract: A system for automatically adjusting the level of a telephone instrument microphone input signal in response to the level of the telephone instrument sidetone signal. The system may provide a test signal to the handset microphone input and receive the sidetone signal that corresponds to the test signal from the handset speaker output. A signal processor may then measure the amount of distortion present in the sidetone. If the amount of distortion is below a predetermined threshold, the level of the test signal is increased by a predetermined increment by adjusting an attenuation or amplification factor, and the amount of distortion in the sidetone is again measured. These steps are repeated until the measured distortion exceeds the threshold. The level of the test signal is then decreased by a predetermined amount. The final test signal thus has a level that maximizes the microphone input signal level with an acceptable minimum of distortion.

Abstract: An interface between a telephone handset and an external device having both data and audio inputs and outputs, such as a voice-over-data modem, allows a user to speak and listen through the handset of the telephone instrument. The interface also allows a voice-over-data modem to be connected to a PBX-type telephone system. The interface includes a filter circuit that allows the audio-frequency signal generated by the handset microphone to pass through to the external device while blocking DC along that path. The circuit also allows the DC bias voltage provided by the telephone base to pass through to the handset microphone while blocking audio-frequency signals on that path. The interface may also include a switching circuit that forms direct electrical connections between the telephone handset and the telephone base when the external device is not in a mode in which it can communicate data, e.g., when a voice-over-data modem is in an on-hook state.

Abstract: A data coupler is disclosed for use in connecting a high speed data modem to a typical telephone handset in a high ambient acoustic noise field. The data coupler features a method for conserving, through a magnetic detection process, the high signal to noise ratio (HSNR) available at the telephone line during the acoustic coupling process. The use of magnetic detection prevents the deterioration of acoustic SNR normally expected in a high ambient acoustic noise field.

Abstract: An apparatus for connecting a telecommunications device, such as a computer or facsimile machine modem, to a telephone line via a telephone set. The telephone set includes a base and a handset connected to the base by a handset cord. The handset cord has at one end a handset plug and the base has a base jack for receiving the handset plug. The apparatus selectively electrically couples one of the handset and the telecommunications device to the base. The apparatus includes a first plug for electrically coupling with the base jack, a first jack for electrically coupling with the handset plug, and the second jack for electrically coupling with the telecommunications device connecting plug. A switch, manually selectable between a first position and a second position, electrically couples the first plug with the first jack when in the first position.
