  • Patent number: 4058272
Abstract: An inertia locking safety belt take-up reel comprises a U-shaped bracket and a rotatable reel including side ratchet wheels and journalled between the bracket side walls. A rockable cross piece including pawl projections is supported between the side walls for movement into engagement with the ratchet wheels and is spring biased out of engagement. A clutch wheel is rotatable with the reel and frictionally rotatably supports a cooperating clutch annulus, the two clutch members pivotally engaging a pawl so that their relative rotation attendant to a rapid acceleration of the reel swings the pawl into engagement with a second ratchet wheel to rock the latter, which in turn rocks the cross piece through an interconnecting crank arm, to lock the reel ratchet wheels by the associated pawls. An alarm control gear is driven by a pinion rotatable with the reel.

  • Patent number: 4036322
Abstract: An automatic braking safety belt retractor reel includes a reel provided with a first ratchet reel rotatable with a shaft and spring biased in a belt retracting direction. A braking pawl is movable into engagement with the ratchet reel by a rockable second ratchet wheel which is advanced by a second pawl pivoted on an inertial wheel and urged into engagement with the ratchet wheel by a cam on the shaft when the inertial wheel lags the rotation of the cam as a result of the rapid shaft acceleration. An armature of magnetic material is mounted on a second pawl and an electromagnet having an annular core, when excited, attracts the armature to prevent the engagement of the second ratchet wheel by the second pawl and the braking of the reel. The electromagnet is excited upon occupation of the seat or closing of the vehicle door and is de-excited upon buckling of the belt.

  • Patent number: 3996967
Abstract: A method for repairing ruptured or otherwise damaged or weakened large diameter pipes such as underground water or sewer pipes, includes opening the opposite ends of the pipe to provide access, cleaning debris from within the pipe and smoothing its inside surface. A peripherally expandable fibrous web reinforced synthetic organic resinous tube which is either thermoplastic or thermosetting and in an uncured state is inserted in the pipe and clamp to the ends thereof by end plates and expanded into tight engagement with the pipe wall by circulating hot pressurized air through the tube. The interface of the pipe and tube may be provided with a heat sensitive adhesive and where the tube resin is thermosetting, the hot air is maintained until curing or setting is effected. Thereafter the repaired pipe is flange reconnected to the opposite end pipes.

  • Patent number: 3995787
Abstract: An automatic locking safety belt rewind reel includes a U-shaped bracket supporting a shaft to which is affixed a spring rewound reel having a ratchet wheel end plate and a rockable ratchet wheel locking first pawl is spring biased out of engagement with the ratchet wheel. An internally toothed second ratchet wheel rockably mounted on the shaft is coupled to the first pawl. Carried by the shaft within the internal ratchet wheel is an inertia wheel carrying a second pawl and a cam wheel so related that rapid acceleration of the shaft causes a lag in the inertia wheel rotation, actuation of the two pawls and locking of the reel. In order to permit free unwinding of the reel, a frustoconical annular retractor member is axially movable toward and away from the path of a follower on the second pawl to respectively free and restrain the pawl in its disengaged position and the retractor member is spring biased to its retracted position and solenoid actuated to its advanced pawl retracting position.

  • Patent number: 3970116
Abstract: A unitary woven composite tube and web includes a tubular section and an interwoven web section which may be formed as a tube, and which is useful for inflatable safety belts and other uses. The composite article is woven wherein the filling runs are successively interwoven with the longitudinal warps along an upper forward first run, a lower return second run below the first run, a third forward run extending to and interweaving the second run at a point intermediate its ends and a return fourth run and the cycle is repeated. Various warp filling weaves may be employed. The tubular section may house a longitudinally extending cable. The filling and warp may be interwoven in any desired pattern.

  • Patent number: 3931866
Abstract: A vehicle safety belt system includes a spring rewind belt retractor reel provided with a solenoid actuated brake and a network controlled by an inertia switch to brake the reel by the energization or deenergization of the solenoid and to maintain the reel in a braked condition an adjustable time interval following the deactuation of the inertia switch. The network includes a solid state Darlington switch having across its input a memory capacitor which is charged by the actuation of the inertia switch and a relay across its output which controls the brake solenoid.

  • Patent number: RE29594
Abstract: An automatic locking vehicle safety belt retractor includes a shaft on which is affixed a belt take up reel having similar first ratchet wheels at its opposite ends. A spring retracted transverse pawl member includes pawl teeth which are rockable with the pawl member into and out of braking engagement with the ratchet wheels and the pawl member is drive coupled to an internally toothed second ratchet wheel rockably mounted on the shaft. A fly wheel is freely rotatable on the shaft within the second ratchet reel and carries a spring retracted second pawl swingable into engagement with the second ratchet wheel and a cam wheel is rotatable with the shaft and engages a cam follower on the second pawl to advance the second pawl upon rotation of the cam wheel relative to the fly wheel.
