Abstract

A new and distinct Medinilla cultivar named ‘RS005’ is disclosed, characterized by large pink bracts, large green leaves and suitability for commercial production. The new variety is a Medinilla, normally produced as an ornamental plant.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Medinilla dolichophylla×magnifica.

Variety denomination: ‘RS005’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new Medinilla cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Robertus H. M. Scheffers, in Monster, Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Medinilla varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The new variety is a product of crossbreeding that occurred during 2008, at a commercial nursery in Monster, Netherlands.

The seed parent is an unpatented, unnamed variety of Medinilla dolichophylla. The pollen parent is an unpatented, unnamed variety Medinilla magnifica. The new variety was discovered in 2009 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2008 crossing, in a commercial nursery in Monster, Netherlands.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar has been performed by vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a commercial nursery in Monster, Netherlands in 2010 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘RS005’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘RS005’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘RS005’ as a new and distinct Medinilla cultivar:

• • 1. Large inflorescence with pink bract coloration.
  • 2. Large green leaves.
  • 3. Suitability for commercial production.

PARENT COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘RS005’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, Medinilla Dolichophylla in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘RS005’ produce a different leaf shape than the seed parent. Additionally, ‘RS005’ also produces a flower of darker pink coloration than those of the seed parent.

Plants of the new cultivar ‘RS005’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent; Medinilla magnifica in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘RS005’ produces double flowers whereas the pollen parent produces a single flower. ‘RS005’ also produces shorter petioles and smaller leaves compared to the pollen parent.

COMMERCIAL COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘RS005’ are best compared to Medinilla ‘RS003’, filed concurrently. While the two cultivars are similar in most horticultural characteristics, ‘RS005’ differs from ‘RS003’ in the following characteristics;

• • 1. ‘RS005’ has longer lateral branches.
  • 2. ‘RS005’ has smaller foliage.
  • 3. Foliage of ‘RS005’ has more greyed-green coloration not found on foliage of ‘RS003’.
  • 4. ‘RS005’ has larger inflorescence with longer peduncles.
  • 5. Inflorescence of ‘RS005’ have less individual flowers than inflorescence of ‘RS003’.
  • 6. Flower bracts of ‘RS005’ are smaller than bracts of ‘RS003’.

The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a close up of typical flowers and foliage of ‘RS005’.

The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2007 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘RS005’ plants grown outdoors in Monster, Netherlands. The growing temperature ranged from 20° C. to 23° C. during the day and from 20° C. to 23° C. during the night. General light conditions are bright, normal sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

• Time to initiate roots: Summer: 21 to 28 days at approximately 20-23° C. Winter: 28 to 35 days at approximately 20-23° C.
• Root description: Moderately dense, non-fleshy, non-fibrous, moderately thick, colored Near Greyed-Orange RHS N170A and N170B.
