  • Patent number: 10272669
Abstract: Improved pliable print rollers for high speed drink can printing machines increase the pliable roller life five- to ten-fold at comparable ink thickness and machine speed. The improved performance results from the selection of materials utilized including a combination of elastomers, and in some case an essentially oil-free composition, and an associated manufacturing process not previously utilized to create pliable print rollers for high speed drink can printing machines. In particular a particular embodiment, the composition includes a combination of elastomers (e.g., 75% polyisoprene and 25% polybutadiene), a filler (e.g., silica), a curing agent (e.g., peroxided), and other additives (e.g., pigment, antioxidant, antiozonant) with little or no oil added as a softener. An illustrative composition including 150 parts by weight contains 100 parts elastomer, 35 parts filler, 4 parts curing agent, and 11 parts other additives (i.e., zero parts oil softener).

Abstract: A consumable supply item for an imaging device holds an initial or refillable volume of ink. An interior retains the ink while exit and return ports define openings through a housing to fluidly communicate the interior to the imaging device. The opening of the return port is larger than the opening of the exit port. The design slows the return of fluid to the housing which minimizes air bubbles or frothiness in the fluid. During use, ink depletes toward a bottom surface of the interior beneath which the ink is prevented from occupying. A housing section below the interior retains a portion of the exit port so that a bottom of the opening of the exit port is substantially horizontally aligned with the bottom surface. It prevents stranding ink beneath the exit port. Further embodiments include port configuration, construction, and modular components, to name a few.

Abstract: A solid imaging apparatus is provided that includes a replaceable cartridge containing a source of build material and an extendable and retractable flexible transport film for transporting the build material layer-by-layer from the cartridge to the surface of a build in an image plane. An operator using the device needs merely to remove a spent cartridge and replace it with a fresh cartridge to continue solid imaging virtually uninterrupted. The apparatus also includes the capability of withdrawing and inserting an imager without the operator having to perform a separate alignment step. A brush attached to the transport film and forming part of the cartridge provides for intra-layer removal of excess uncured build material. If desired, the apparatus can produce a fully reacted build. A high intensity UV source cures the build between layers. An injection molded build pad is designed to hold a build in an inverted position for improving the build.

  • Patent number: 8100056
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling a machine processing sheet material. The processing machine has at least one printing or coating group and a cylinder that is coupled to a direct drive and is decoupled mechanically from a main drive acting on a gear train of a plurality of sheet transport cylinders and that can be driven in a given way at least relative to the sheet-guiding cylinders. The cylinder having an associated inking group with an inking group roller that can be driven by the main drive and gear train. Printing contact in a contact zone of the cylinder carrying the printing form with an adjacent rubber blanket cylinder is cancelled for cleaning. The inking group roller of the inking group is separated on a drive side from the sheet transport cylinders driven by the main drive and gear train. The inking group roller is coupled on the drive side to the cylinder carrying the printing form.

  • Publication number: 20110132218
Abstract: The ink in a printing press, in which a stock of material is being printed in an ongoing printing process, is registered. At least one ink is applied to the stock in several inking zones. A measured value, indicating an ink density, is determined for the at least one ink which is being applied to the stock in the printing process and within the printing press. A relation is formed between the measured ink density for a specific ink in a selected ink zone and a measured ink density value determined for the same ink in at least one other inking zone. The relation between the measured ink density values in different inking zones is formed only if the majority of the inking zones of a specific inking unit of the printing press supply one respective measured ink density value for an ink supplied by that inking unit, and when the measured ink density value reaches at least a predetermined fraction of a preset, desired value in the respective inking zone.

Abstract: An embodiment is a method and apparatus to meter ink for electrographic printing. An ink loading mechanism having an anilox roller fills ink from an ink supply into cells in the anilox roller having a plurality of valleys and lands that form the cells. The ink loading mechanism causes the valleys to be full or nearly full with the ink. The anilox roller rotates in a first direction. A blanket roller rotationally engaged with the anilox roller pulls the ink out of the cells and causes the valleys to be partially filled. The blanket roller rotates in a second direction. A first cleaning blade cleans tops of the lands of the cells. Another embodiment is a method and apparatus to meter ink for electrographic printing. An ink loading mechanism having an anilox roller fills ink from an ink supply into cells in the anilox roller having a plurality of valleys and lands forming the cells.
