  • Patent number: 6406751
Abstract: In the paper coating operation a wet or dry edge from coating composition is formed on the, seen in the direction of movement of the paper web, downstream side of the doctor, the so-called stalagmite formation. This stalagmite formation leads to various problems in the papermaking process and especially occurs at high speeds of the paper web and/or a high solids content of the coating composition, which two operating conditions are exactly required to obtain a maximum paper yield and a high paper quality. According to the invention the stalagmite formation is effectively prevented by supplying a fluid inhibiting the stalagmite formation to an area bounded, on the one hand, by the paper web and, on the other hand, by the above side of the doctor blade.

  • Patent number: 5257578
Abstract: The present invention provides an automatic cleaning device for cleaning blanket cylinders in a web fed offset lithographic printing press. The device includes at least one brush roller for removing foreign matter from a blanket cylinder. The device also includes pneumatic cylinders which bring the brush roller into engagable contact with the blanket cylinder and the web. A flicker roller is also provided for flicking particles and other waste debris off the brush roller. In an engaged position, the brush roller, blanket cylinder and the web form an enclosed triangular region with the flicker roller being disposed within this region. This enables the device to be self-cleaning while at the same time prevents blanket wash waste from invading inker and dampening units.

  • Patent number: 5219618

  • Patent number: 5136967
Abstract: In order to clean the support region at the bottom end of a doctor element which is clamped to a support and is thereby held to the surface of spreadable material to be doctored, the leaf spring doctor element is removable from a stop on the support against which the leaf spring is clamped in operation by a plate pusher. The support is shaped to have a groove extending along the width of the stop and the support for the doctor element. A sidewall of the groove is defined in a ledge that is movable along the support and along the groove. The sidewall supports oscillation pulse transmitters. A liquid pulse transmitting medium in the groove transmits the oscillations across the grove to the area of the leaf spring support to be cleaned. The oscillation pulse transmitters may be a series of transmitters extending along the sidewall along the groove or may comprise a long bar shaped oscillator which is oscillated at its ends.

  • Patent number: 5081950
Abstract: A coating device for a material web, such as a paper or cardboard web, is provided. A doctor band, serving as a doctor element, is run over reversing rolls in the form of a loop and along a backing roll that supports the material web. A doctor band drive is provided by take-up drums that can be driven by a motor. The feed of the doctor band is very low, for instance, 2 to 10 cm/min. This provides sufficient time for performing a thorough cleaning of the doctor band. The band may be cleaned by nozzles, scrapers and the like.

  • Patent number: 4770116
Abstract: A heat and pressure roll fusing apparatus for fixing toner images to copy substrates, the toner comprising a thermoplastic resin. The apparatus includes an internally heated fuser roll cooperating with an unheated bare metal backup or pressure roll to form a nip through which the copy substrates pass with the images contacting the heated roll. The heated fuser roll is characterized by a comformable outer layer or surface which by way of example is fabricated from a silicone rubber or "Viton" material to which a low viscosity polymeric release fluid is applied. Release fluid is contained in a sump and the pressure roll is partially immersed in the fluid. Thus, the release fluid is applied to the surface of the internally heated fuser roll via the bare metal pressure roll. The roll structures are such as to provide maximum area of contact in the nip, while minimizing the area of contact between the pressure roll and the copy substrates.

  • Patent number: 4705388
Abstract: A method and a device are provided for determining the moment that a layer of tacky material needs to be rejuvenated. Typically, the layer is present on a cleaning member for removing contaminants such as paper dust and softened toner material from a fusing surface. The method includes measuring the light reflection value of the layer of tacky material, comparing the measured light reflection value with a reference value and rejuvenating the layer of tacky material as soon as the measured light reflection value differs by a predetermined value from the reference value. The device implements the method of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 4586433
Abstract: An apparatus for over the edge printing including a printing squeegee which forces ink through clear portions of a printing screen onto a workpiece. Excess ink which is forced through clear portions of the printing screen and which extend over the edge of the workpiece, are cleaned by a cleaning assembly which includes a cleaning belt. The cleaning belt is unrolled below the printing screen and an excess ink squeegee prints the excess ink onto the cleaning belt which is then cleaned and re-rolled and the apparatus is made ready for the next printing stroke.

  • Patent number: 4449475
Abstract: The cleaning device for the drum-shaped intermediate image carrier of an electrophoretic printer is used in the field of technical data processing in order to improve the quality of the electrophoretically printed color images. The toner suspensions of different color used must be removed from the intermediate image carrier and must be separately applied to separate collecting reservoirs, one of which is provided for each toner suspension color. To this end, a ruler-shaped upper edge (5, 11) of an air duct (21) forms a narrow gap in conjunction with the intermediate image carrier (1). Therethrough air is forced in order to ensure that the toner suspension flows from the intermediate image carrier to a collecting reservoir (8) via a wiper (6) and a chute (7) of the cleaning device associated with each toner suspension. The chutes can be displaced so that accurate separation of the suspensions is ensured and each suspension is applied to the associated reservoir.
