  • Patent number: 8205650
Abstract: A clamping assembly to hold a woodworking knife in place in a woodworking machine. The clamping assembly comprises a clamping component comprising a body and an actuator. The body has three discrete contact positions distributed thereon: 1) a fulcrum located generally at one end, 2) a knife abutting portion located generally at the other end, and 3) a bearing surface located elsewhere. The actuator is for applying a clamping force to the body along a clamping axis located intermediate of the knife abutting portion and the fulcrum. The fulcrum is a surface having a normal that is at an angle to the clamping axis. The bearing surface is a surface wherein a line normal to the bearing surface intersects the line normal to the fulcrum at a position outside of the clamping component at a location farther askew of the clamping axis than the fulcrum.

  • Patent number: 6318222
Abstract: A cutting implement with a blade, a handle, and a tip, used in conjunction with a planar support surface upon which food or a similar substance rests. The handle and tip cooperate to maintain the blade parallel to, and a pre-determined distance from, the support surface during a reciprocal horizontally-translating slicing motion, thus ensuring that slices are produced with two parallel planar surfaces which are uniformly of a pre-determined thickness.

  • Patent number: 5427163
Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for cutting squared timber into a number of thin boards. Individual boards 32 are cut off by a blade 30 from the squared timber in each of the successive cutting machines 14a-g, essentially in longitudinal direction of the squared timber. The thickness of the squared timber 26 is selected in such a way that, once an integral number of boards having a predetermined thickness are cut off, a residual board remains which is reduced to the same thickness d as the boards 32 by shaving. The shaving preferably takes place by placing a planer 18 after the last cutting machine 14g. The installation 10 is equipped with a material feed 12 and a conveying system 20 for removing the cut boards, the cutting machines and the planer are also connected to one another by conveying devices 16, 24.

  • Patent number: 5400843
Abstract: Sheets of wood are cut from a timber piece along a guide and against a cung blade. A transverse taper of the wood piece is measured as the wood piece is conveyed. In accordance with changes in the measured transverse taper, the guide or the blade is pivoted about an axis extending perpendicular to the blade edge as the wood piece is being conveyed. Also, the longitudinal taper of the wood piece can be measured as the wood piece is conveyed. In accordance with the changes in the measured longitudinal taper, the distance between the blade edge and the wood guide is varied as the wood piece is conveyed.

  • Patent number: 5390716
Abstract: A machine is described for the slicing removal of a board from a cant adved longitudinally past a blade and pressed, from the side opposite from the blade, by means of a pressing device against the blade and a counterpressure rail mounted in front of the blade. In contrast to conventional constructions, in which driven feed rollers for the cant are located before and beyond the actual slicing device, driven roller pairs are provided directly in the region over which the blade, which forms a very acute angle with the feed direction, extends. The feed roller pairs are moreover floatingly journaled so that they do not affect the position of the cant. By the novel arrangement, an overly lengthy force transmission path through the cant itself from the feed rollers to the blade is avoided.

  • Patent number: 5318083
Abstract: An apparatus for severing thin boards from squared timber includes a guide urface upon which a squared timber is conveyed and pressed against a cutting edge of a blade, as well as a counter pressing edge. The adjustment of the distance between the guide surface and a plane parallel thereto which extends through the blade cutting edge (i.e., the thickness of the thin board to be cut) is effected by relative adjustment of the blade cutting edge to the guide surface in an inclined plane which forms an acute adjustment angle .alpha. with a line normal to the guide surface. Because of the relative adjustment of the blade cutting edge to the guide surface along the angle .alpha., when a different board thickness is desired, the distance between the blade cutting edge and the counter pressing edge in the cutting direction is automatically adapted. In a preferred embodiment of the apparatus, the width of an exit guide channel for the severed thin boards can also be simultaneously set to the desired board thickness.

  • Patent number: 5010934
Abstract: A woodwork slicer apparatus is disclosed for slicing a thick veneer, which is pressed and advanced by a material feeding belt to a table surface. The material feeding belt, driven by power, is arranged so as to oppose a table, which includes a knife. The relief face of the knife is disposed so as to oppose a rand. There is a space between the relief face and the rand that is substantially the same as the thickness of the veneer to be sliced. Further, a guide, which is fixed by a fixing means so as to be in contact with the rand, is provided. For the above reasons, the veneer to be sliced is prevented from being cracked and is guided into a feeding direction along with the guide.

  • Patent number: 4503895
Abstract: An improved cutter knife for wood chip and flake producing apparatus includes shallow grooves in either the heel face or the gullet face of the knife intersecting the cutting edge and extending away from the cutting edge. The depth of the grooves is less than the depth of cut of the knife, and the grooves and corners formed by the grooves with the cutting edge provide an aggressive serrated cutting edge which penetrates into the wood and remains sharp longer than conventional cutting edges. Also disclosed is a novel wood flake material in which flake members have a larger area of exposured grain than of exposed side grain, thereby providing a short fiber length flake which can absorb moisture quickly by means of the exposed end grains, and can also dry quickly. The flake material is particularly useful as a bedding material for animals.

  • Patent number: 3998252
Abstract: A wood slicing apparatus for slicing of slats, strips or similar elements from board-shaped base material, with minimum wastage and noise, and maintenance of plane cut surfaces. Boards are initially placed in a loading station from which the topmost board is automatically transferred to a cutting station whereat slats are cut from the board by a cutting unit carrying rigidly held thin cutting blades. The slats are subsequently transferred through smoothing and squaring-off means which apply pressure to smooth both pairs of opposite sides of each slat, during which time the cutting unit is returned to its initial position and the board is advanced to permit severing of further slats therefrom, this action being repeated until there is insufficient board material for removal of further slats, whereupon the apparatus is automatically stopped.
