Abstract: A cutter head assembly for a wood planing machine includes a rotary shaft, a plurality of blade carriers non-rotatably retained on the shaft, and a plurality of cutter blades respectively secured on outer wall surfaces of the blade carriers by means of a plurality of screw fasteners. The outer wall surface of each blade carrier includes a leading region and a trailing region that form a first included angle of at least 90 degrees therebetween. Each blade has a first major wall surface abutting against the leading region, a second major wall surface disposed opposite to the first major wall surface, a cutting edge interposed between the first and second major wall surfaces and extending beyond the outer wall surface of the respective blade carrier, and an abutting edge disposed opposite to the cutting edge to abut against the trailing region. The cutting edge of each cutter blade intersects the second major wall surface at a second included angle ranging from 35 degrees to 45 degrees.

  • Patent number: 5662435
Abstract: A cutter bit includes a body integrally formed with a mounting shank. The body is formed with a pair of chip boxes having an arcuate surface and a planar surface with a cutting knife mounted to each planar surface. A plurality of equally spaced recesses are formed in the body to reduce cutter bit weight, and to promote heat transfer from the cutter bit to the surrounding atmosphere. Adjacent recesses form annular ribs which extend circumferentially around the body from one cutting knife to the arcuate surface adjacent the other cutting knife. The arcuate ribs operate as heat exchanger fins by substantially increasing the outer surface area of the cutter bit thereby substantially increasing the rate of heat transfer from the cutter bit to the surrounding atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 5201353
Abstract: A debarker head for use in a rotary tree debarking machine has a drive shaft with a polygonal cross sectional shape and a plurality of substantially similar cutting elements with mounting apertures corresponding to the drive shaft shape and sized for slip fit engagement of the cutting elements on the drive shaft so that the cutting elements may be mounted to the drive shaft at a number of rotational positions relative to the drive shaft. Further, the cutting elements have a plurality of arms with cutting knives. The number of arms of at least some of the cutting elements is not an integer multiple of the number of sides of the mounting aperture so that a variety of cutting knife arrangements for debarking various species of logs using the same head may be obtained by adjusting the rotational position of the cutting elements relative to the drive shaft. This design of debarker head can be repaired in the field.

  • Patent number: 4813464
Abstract: A rotary blade for a resurfacing tool. The blade has two or more sets of teeth extending essentially perpendicular to the plane of the main disk of the blade. The teeth of varying rows are configured to perform either a rough first cut or a smooth finish cut or a cut inbetween. The blade is oriented in such a manner as to allow for a rough cut to a set depth followed by a smooth cut to a slightly greater depth.

  • Patent number: 4738291
Abstract: A power saw having a stationary, tree-supporting platform disc, a rotatable tree cutting disc and drive means for rotating the cutting disc. The saw cutting elements have circular, conical or concave cutting faces with circumferential cutting edges. The cutting elements are removably attached to the saw by means of holders which absorb forces imparted to the cutting elements and transmit the forces to the cutting disc. The holders facilitate rapid replacement of dulled or damaged cutting elements.

  • Patent number: 4041996
Abstract: Apparatus for eradicating tree stumps comprising a rotary cylinder or drum having knives or cutters around its periphery. The cutters are mounted on rings which encircle the drum. The rings have circumferentially spaced mounting surfaces which are staggered relative to one another so that the cutters when secured to the mounting surfaces are themselves staggered for more effective cutting action. The drum is supported by two rotary hydraulic and/or electric motors having aligned output shafts which are connected to the ends of the drum to support and also to rotate it. The motors are carried by the arms of a yoke. Instead of two motors, there may be a motor at one end of the drum and a bearing at the other.

  • Patent number: 3986543
Abstract: A rotary cutter knife in which a body is provided which is made up of coaxial discs in adjacent relation. Each disc has cutting edge portions distributed about the periphery thereof and in one relatively rotated position of the discs the cutting edge portions align in the axial direction thereby positioning the cutting edge portions for easy sharpening.
