Abstract: An exothermic welding jig, molds for the jig, and a method of forming and manipulating the mold parts is disclosed. Upper and lower mold parts are included with a crucible fitted on and clamped to the upper mold part. The upper mold part and crucible may be moved as a unit to open and close the mold and also inverted when open for cleaning and inspection. The crucible can quickly be removed or snapped in place for mold or crucible change out. The jig will fit in cramped quarters and has a handle which may be used as a cane or supporting device. A toggle opens and closes the mold set and will hold the molds at any position where released. A mold system with diagonal sleeving makes it easier to form X-connections and other connections in tight or restrictive locations. The method includes the attachment and manipulative steps.

Abstract: Exothermic welding apparatus includes a toggle frame jig for supporting vertically split molds. The toggle includes a post projecting parallel to the main pivot of the jig on which telescopes a crucible support. The crucible support includes a handle extending above the crucible when secured to the support. A quick acting toggle connects the support and post enabling the crucible to be assembled, cleaned, or prepared remote from the molds and then quickly installed and locked in position.

Abstract: In pipes and the like of relatively heavy section, a boss is formed on the side of the pipe or section by drilling a hole in the pipe, forming a mold around the hole with the hole in relatively vertical position and depositing in the mold and against the walls of the pipe, thereby joining to those walls, electroslag metal which forms a boss on the pipe.
Abstract: Exothermic welding device for welding to a surface underwater includes a Thermit charge surrounded by a movable inner casing abutting a plate. The plate includes magnetic or other means for attaching the device to the surface to be welded. Urging means force the Thermit melt through the surface. The urging means disclosed are a weight, spring, or pressure system arrangement. An outer housing surrounds the inner housing and urging means, and joins the plate. The device may be used for underhand or overhead welding, or to a vertical surface.
Abstract: A method of repairing large castings, such as ingot molds and mold stools, by employing an aluminothermic reduction reaction without using containment perimeters and without preheating the casting. The resultant repaired article has a metallurgically bonded plug in the hole or eroded surface with a thick abrasion-resistant slag covering over the deposited metal.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for containing the molten reaction products of a reactive cladding process, such as an aluminothermic reduction cladding process, in which a refractory-lined perimeter rests on either a sand bed or a steel base. A second perimeter surrounding the inner perimeter and forming an annular space therewith is also situated on either the sand bed or the steel base. Sand placed in the annular space between the two perimeters chills any molten reaction products which escape the confines of the inner perimeter, preventing any spread of this material.
