Abstract: A screw conveyor includes a steam delivery chamber, a condensate return chamber, and a helical hollow flight. In example embodiments, the condensate return chamber is defined by an inner pipe, the steam delivery chamber is defined between the outer and inner pipes, and the helical flight extends radially from the outer pipe. The screw conveyor includes a series of heating zones, each having a “closed-loop” helical passageway formed by the hollow flight and each having a corresponding steam inlet, condensate outlet, and barrier. Steam travels into the screw conveyor, through the steam inlets, and into the helical passageways, where it condenses as it heats a material conveyed by the screw conveyor. As the screw conveyor rotates, the barriers force the condensate upward until it drains through the condensate outlets and into the condensate return chamber for removal from the screw conveyor.

  • Patent number: 3934857
Abstract: An improved apparatus for mixing and reacting materials that include at least one liquid while simultaneously transferring heat to or from the mixture. A rotating centrifugal impeller mounted in a lower chamber of a closed reactor vessel draws the materials to be mixed from an upper chamber through a short central inlet and mixes them with high energy while impelling them between spaced blades extending outward from the eye of the impeller to a high pressure region at its circumference. The mixture then returns to the upper chamber through a plurality of elongated conduits having thin walls. For maximum heat transfer area in relation to cross-sectional flow area, each conduit is arranged with a first inner portion of annular cross section and a second, reverse flow, outer portion separated from the inner portion by a double-walled tube, the tube having passages between its double walls for circulating heat exchanging fluid.

  • Patent number: 3931853
Abstract: Device for the supply and discharge of cooling liquid in the worms of an extruder press, the worm or worms being situated at some distance from the housing, being provided with a stationary sleeve with a stationary centering ring near both ends thereof and rotatable adjusting rings on each of its sides. The sleeve is furnished with at least two circular chambers, which are delimited by sealing rings, these chambers being in open communication with cooling liquid channels in the worm shaft and which are each connected with an external supply and discharge pipe for the cooling liquid, while part of the sleeve comprises oil holes and overflow openings.
