Patent number: 10683732Abstract: Lateral wellbores intersecting a main wellbore are located with calipers on a tool. Each caliper includes first and second segments pinned to one another. Ends of each first segment distal from the pinned connections pivotingly attach to the tool. Ends of each second segment distal from the pinned connections couple with shuttles that slide axially along the tool. Biasing means urge the shuttles toward the pivoting connections of the first elongated segments to urge the pinned connections radially outward. When downhole and away from a lateral wellbore, walls of the main wellbore prevent the calipers from projecting into a radial maximum extension. When adjacent a lateral wellbore, calipers facing the lateral wellbore are extendable to a maximum radial extension. Distances between the pinned connections and tool are estimated with sensors; and openings to lateral wellbores are detectable based on the estimated distances. A steering arm optionally steers the tool downhole.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2018Date of Patent: June 16, 2020Assignee: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventor: Abdulrahman Abdulaziz Al-Mulhem

Publication number: 20140196893Abstract: Many wellbore service operations involve placing a line in the wellbore. The line may be used to transmit power to downhole tools, convey signals from downhole-measurement instruments, or both. A problem associated with such operations involves drag forces experienced by the line as process fluids flow through the well, particularly the interior of a tubular body such as casing. The drag forces may cause the line to fail. Magnetizing the line solves this problem. During deployment, the line will migrate and become attached to the casing. Drag forces are significantly reduced because the line is no longer surrounded by moving fluid.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 20, 2012Publication date: July 17, 2014Applicant: SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORPORATIONInventor: Pierre Vigneaux

Patent number: 7975541Abstract: A borehole logging tool includes a housing oriented along a longitudinal axis, and a centralizer assembly that positions the housing substantially at the center of the borehole. In one example, the centralizer assembly includes a plurality of centralizer arms radially extendable outward from the longitudinal axis. The borehole logging tool further includes a scanning head that rotates a plurality of scanning sensors axially within the borehole about the longitudinal axis. The scanning head further includes a plurality of linkage arms coupled to the plurality of scanning sensors such that the scanning sensors are radially extendable outward from the longitudinal axis. The borehole logging tool further includes an extension assembly adapted to substantially concurrently control the radial extension of the centralizer arms and the plurality of sensors.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2009Date of Patent: July 12, 2011Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Stuart Anthony Large, Scott Ronald Kennedy, Richard Harvey Wood

Publication number: 20110132614Abstract: A unique landing nipple has spaced control line connections and external control lines running from the surface to those connections. A hydraulic barrier valve, such as a ball valve, is run in to a predetermined landing nipple and latched in position where the control line connections are in the right locations to operate the valve. A landing nipple with a latching groove alone can be used with a wireline run barrier valve to latch it into position at the desired location. A shifting tool is used to operate the mechanically actuated valve. More than one valve can be positioned or used in the string at a time or the same valve can also be positioned at different landing nipples at different times to meet the production needs of the well operator.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 9, 2009Publication date: June 9, 2011Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Ronald J. Publication number: 20110030945Abstract: A centralizer for an instrument such as an in-place inclinometer is described. The centralizer has a clamp with an inner receptacle configured for coupling to the instrument housing, and a plurality of elongate fingers extending from the clamp that center the instrument in the casing. The fingers carry rollers that fit into grooves in the instrument casing. The fingers are arcuate and provide a spring-like contact force that causes the rollers to abut the instrument casing and stabilize the instrument.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 7, 2009Publication date: February 10, 2011Applicant: GEODAQ, INC.Inventors: John Lemke, Lars Pedersen
