  • Patent number: 11852009
Abstract: A method to test or monitor the integrity of a cement barrier, comprising providing an assembly therebelow including: a perforating device; a control mechanism to control the perforating device, a pressure sensor, a wireless communication device and a pressure sensor. The perforating device is activated to perforate casing below the barrier and a pressure test may be conducted. The creation of the perforation(s) below the barrier allows an assessment of the integrity of the barrier across its entire width, and especially its bond to the formation, rather than only a central portion of the barrier. Electromagnetic or acoustic wireless signals are used to retrieve data from below the barrier.

  • Patent number: 11555372
Abstract: A system and method for shutting in a wellbore in the event that primary blow-out preventer (BOP) system fails. The system comprises a smart-BOP shear ram system that operates independently and autonomously from the primary BOP system and that includes a pneumatically actuated shear ram installed on top of the primary BOP preventers. A dedicated control system and pneumatic pump are encased inside one or more explosion proof boxes. The control system detects primary BOP failure using sensors located above and below the primary BOP shear ram and actuates the smart-BOP shear ram accordingly. The control system is configured such that, activation of the primary BOP stack automatically activates the smart-BOP shear ram system and the control unit assumes autonomous control over operation of the smart-BOP shear ram until the control unit confirms that a complete seal has been made against the wellbore fluids.

  • Patent number: 11542768
Abstract: A method to manipulate a well, comprising running an apparatus (60a) having a container (68a) with a volume of gas at a higher pressure than a surrounding portion of the well. The well is isolated, and a wireless control signal, such as an electromagnetic or acoustic signal, is sent to operate a valve assembly (62a) to selectively allow or resist fluid exit from a portion of the container (68a), via a port (61a). Some of the pressurised gas may itself be expelled in to the surrounding portion of the well, or it may be used to drive a fluid out of the container, such as an acid.

  • Patent number: 11187058
Abstract: A pressure relief valve system for a fluid injection system is provided. The PRV system comprises one or more pressure transducers configured to sense fluid pressure within the fluid injection system. The transducers then generate electrical signals representative of fluid pressure readings within the fluid injection system in real time. Signals are received by a controller which compares pressure readings with a stored pressure threshold. An actuation signal is sent upon detecting a signal representative of a pressure that exceeds the stored pressure threshold, causing an electraulically-actuated valve to rotatably move to an open position. The PRV system includes a bypass feature that allows the operator to manually open or close a valve when the stored pressure threshold is reached. An apparatus includes a first sensor configured to measure a input mud flow pumped into the well, and a second sensor configured to measure a variation of a return mud flow emerging from the well. The apparatus further includes a controller connected to the first sensor, and to the second sensor. The controller is configured to identify an ongoing or imminent kick event based on monitoring and comparing an evolution of the input mud flow as measured by the first sensor and an evolution of the return mud flow as inferred based on measurements received from the second sensor. Additionally, a third sensor can be included in the apparatus to confirm the conclusion made by the controller before alerting the user that a kick has likely occurred.

  • Patent number: 9004175
Abstract: A method and system for rapid containment and intervention of a subsea well blowout that can be performed in a rapid and efficient manner, where containment will minimize the damage to the environment and assets. The method can include disconnecting a riser from a subsea well after a blowout has occurred and moving the mobile offshore drilling unit away from the subsea well. Connecting a lower marine riser package with a blowout preventer, and diverting the well. The pressure and flow of the well fluid can be observed. At least of portion of the diversion path can be closed off and kill fluid and or cement pumped to the subsea well to kill and control the well.

  • Patent number: 8997874
Abstract: A method of evacuating hydrocarbons from a plurality of nested tubulars of a well pipe, extending from an underwater well tree, includes attaching a fluid transmission line to the underwater well tree, the fluid transmission line having one end portion forming the attachment to the tree and the other end portion attached to a pump that forces fluid under pressure to the tree and attached nested tubulars. Openings are formed through one or more tubulars at a selected location. A specially configured fitting is attached to the tubulars. The fitting seals the openings. The fitting has an expandable seal that is expandable responsive to rotation of a rotating member that rotates upon a saddle, pulling a tapered mandrel against the seal. The saddle surrounds the mandrel and bears against an outer tubular of the nested tubulars. The fitting mandrel has a bore through which hydrocarbons escape from the tubulars.

  • Patent number: 8978774
Abstract: A subsea mud pump can be used to return heavy drilling fluid to the surface. In order to provide a less stringent requirement for such a pump and to better manage the bottom hole pressure in the case of a gas kick or well control event, the gas should be separated from the drilling fluid before the drilling fluid enters the subsea mud pump and the pressure within the separating chamber. The mud pump suction should be controlled and kept equal or lower than the ambient seawater pressure. This can be achieved within the cavities of the subsea BOP by a system arrangement and methods explained. This function can be used with or without a drilling riser connecting the subsea BOP to a drilling unit above the body of water.
