Patent number: 9352284Abstract: This disclosure examines using alginate lyase to catalytically degrade alginate in order to decrease affinity and fouling potential to membranes of 0.2 and 0.02 ?m pore size, respectively within a process line of a filtration system. Enzymatically treated alginate caused less fouling on both ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes than original alginate. Enzymatically treated alginate is predicted to cause less fouling on both membranes within the pH range of approximately 3.0 to approximately 10.0. Without the presence of calcium cation, alginate lyase reduced the foulant resistance by more than 82% for both membranes. In the presence of 1 mM calcium cation, alginate lyase reduced the foulant resistance by more than 55%. In addition, the foulant structure composed of enzymatically treated alginate was more readily removed by backwashing, suggesting reversible fouling. The advantages of using enzymatic technique to control membrane fouling include high efficiency and no damage to the membrane materials.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2012Date of Patent: May 31, 2016Assignee: Purdue Research FoundationInventor: Dong Chen

The aeration subsystem includes a compressor section that compresses the liquid waste. The method includes mixing enzymes into the fluid waste material, compressing the fluid waste material with the compressor, injecting air into the compressed fluid waste material, and determining whether the fluid waste material is at a desired cleanliness, and if not, recirculating the fluid waste material through the compressor.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 10, 2013Publication date: April 10, 2014Inventors: Kenneth J. Patent number: 8690993Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for the treatment of process gas from an anaerobic digestion system or a landfill gas system. In one embodiment, the system comprises a caustic scrubber including a vertical column having a top and a bottom and including a counter current flow system, wherein a process gas stream flows up vertically through the column in counter current flow to a caustic liquid solution that flows downward through the column. The caustic liquid solution removes at least one acid from the process gas stream, wherein treated gas that is substantially free of acids bubbles out through an opening at the top of the vertical column.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2013Date of Patent: April 8, 2014Assignee: Clean Energy Renewable Fuels, LLCInventor: Jeffrey J. Publication number: 20140069866Abstract: A zinc compound and methods for use in removing phosphate from water. Preferably the compound is used in removing phosphate from water in swimming pools, spas, and similar structures. Several water treatment techniques are disclosed, as well as a variety of different methods for delivery of the active ingredients. These delivery methods include use of a slurry of the active reagent in solution as well as a tablet, powder, or granulated structure. Additionally, the water treatment techniques may incorporate the use of a combination including both enzymatic compositions and compounds for phosphate removal.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2013Publication date: March 13, 2014Applicant: Natural Chemistry L.P.Inventor: Richard Okun

Publication number: 20140061127Abstract: The invention presents a urea bio-electrochemical (UBE) system to achieve resource recovery from water recycling systems. A GAC-urease bioreactor was used to recover urea from wastewater stream, and converted to ammonia. Then, the ammonia produced was used to feed an electrochemical cell to gather electrical energy. The invention shows the feasibility of using the UBE system in combination with a forward osmosis subsystem for water reclamation.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2012Publication date: March 6, 2014Inventors: Carlos R. Publication number: 20140004583Abstract: A composition comprising mesoporous aggregates of magnetic nanoparticles and free-radical producing enzyme (i.e., enzyme-bound mesoporous aggregates), wherein the mesoporous aggregates of magnetic nanoparticles have mesopores in which the free-radical-producing enzyme is embedded. Methods for synthesizing the enzyme-bound mesoporous aggregates are also described. Processes that use said enzyme-bound mesoporous aggregates for depolymerizing lignin, removing aromatic contaminants from water, and polymerizing monomers polymerizable by a free-radical reaction are also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 9, 2012Publication date: January 2, 2014Applicant: CORNELL UNIVERSITYInventors: Stephane C.
