  • Publication number: 20150001189
Abstract: An apparatus and method for fastening dissimilar metals like steel and aluminum utilizes a steel rivet and a spot welding machine. The rivet and metals are stacked and the heat from the welder's electric current softens the lower melting point aluminum allowing the rivet to penetrate the aluminum and weld to the steel layer. The fastener may be used to join stacks with several layers of different materials and may be used to apply a threaded socket or stud made from steel or titanium to an aluminum or magnesium alloy structure. Layers of non-conductive materials like plastic and ceramics may also be affixed to a conductive layer using the fastener made from a compatible material that extends through a pilot hole.

  • Patent number: 7870656
Abstract: Method for connecting two or more metal sheets or profile parts, especially of an automobile body segment as well as said automobile body segment. A method is described for joining two or more metal sheets and/or profile parts of which typically one is a high strength steel with the following steps. a) mechanically joining in a force-locking or frictional manner the metal sheets or profile parts at one or more connecting sites and subsequently b) thermally joining the connecting sites by means of pressure welding. With the method according to the invention in particular in the motor vehicle sector automobile body segments can be produced which display qualitatively very high quality point weld joints.

  • Patent number: 6836948
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of joining a sheet metal part to a metal tube to form an assembly. In an overlapping configuration, the parts are held together under a clamping force while a self-piercing rivet is driven through the assembly by a welding electrode. The rivet pierces and passes through the sheet metal part and then through at least substantial portion of the metal tube to thereby form a mechanical interlock. An electrical current is then applied to this mechanical retention to melt a portion of the rivet as well as a portion of the metal surrounding the joining region. The flow of electrical current is then stopped after several welding cycles where the now melted material is allowed to solidify upon cooling, thereby forming a weld.

  • Publication number: 20030221764
Abstract: A flexible imaging member seam treatment method comprising bonding a thermoplastic polymer film to the seam of the flexible imaging member after placing the film on the seam. The film is bonded by heating the film above a glass transition temperature of at least one of a thermoplastic polymer from which the film is made and a polymer from which an imaging layer of the flexible imaging member is made. The film can be formed on a flexible, removable substrate. Treatment according to embodiments significantly improves seam region physical properties, greatly reducing cracking and delamination resulting from bending stresses induced by traversal of rollers.

  • Patent number: 6417490
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and device for thermally supporting mechanical joints by means of punched rivets with a semi-hollow rivet or a solid rivet or by pounding. The method is characterized in that a local and time limited heating of the joint parts (1a, 1b) occurs by means of electric resistance heating in the future forming zone, whereby the heating is carried out by means of a hold-down device (5) and a matrix (4) or by elements (10/11, 12/13) arranged next to or elements (14, 15) arranged in front of said hold-down device and matrix. The heating is initiated at the start of or immediately before the joining process and is completed before the forming begins.

  • Patent number: 6281458
Abstract: An auxiliary magnetic trip unit for a circuit breaker arranged on the load strap of an industrial-rated circuit breaker to interrupt circuit current upon occurrence of a high-level short circuit fault. The magnetic trip unit employs a magnet yoke, an armature, a trip lever for interacting with a latching mechanism of a circuit breaker operating mechanism, and a lever arranged to restrain the armature from moving toward the magnet yoke and to release the armature in response to a predetermined level of pressurized gas. Thus providing an auxiliary magnetic trip unit for use with circuit breakers for selective short circuit overcurrent protection in an electrical distribution system with circuit breakers connected in series.

  • Patent number: 5828028
Abstract: An apparatus and method for resistance welding and then hot forging first and second workpieces together is disclosed. The first workpiece is provided with a deformable rivet. The second workpiece is provided with an aperture sized to receive the deformable rivet. The first and second workpieces are placed together with the deformable rivet of the first workpiece extending through the aperture in the second workpiece. A resistance heating power supply having a pair of power output terminals is provided. One of the terminals is connected in electrical communication with the first workpiece and the other one of the terminals is connected to a hot forging electrode. The hot forging electrode is movable relative to the deformable rivet. The hot forging electrode is affixed to an actuator. The actuator shifts the hot forging electrode into and out of engagement with the deformable rivet. A transducer provides an output indicative of the position of the hot forging electrode to determine rivet deformation.
