  • Patent number: 4819856
Abstract: Method and apparatus for inserting fasteners into holes in a workpiece. The apparatus includes a finger carrying device which is carried by an anvil for telescoping movement relative to the anvil, the finger carrying device includes a bore coaxial with the anvil and through which the anvil may pass as it moves from a raised position to a lowered position. The finger carrying device is provided with a side port through which fasteners may be inserted by a gravity injector, the side port being disposed below the anvil when it is in its raised position. A plurality of annular arrays of resilient fingers are mounted in the bore below the side port. A fastener, after being injected into the bore of the finger carrying device, is pushed by the anvil through the fingers as the anvil moves to its lowered position, the annular arrays of resilient fingers properly orienting the fastener in coaxial alignment with the anvil and with a hole in a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4811881
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for supplying and installing plastic expansion rivets with breakaway mandrels in holes in a workpiece. It comprises a hand-held, trigger actuated, pneumatically-operated installation tool; a rivet-supply mechanism for supply rivets one-by-one to the tool on a timely basis; and a vacuum-operated, mandrel-removal mechanism for removing broken away mandrels from the tool. The installation tool has a hollow barrel with a nose piece at its working end for receiving and releasably holding each rivet delivered thereto. Two piston assemblies are slidably mounted in the hollow barrel: one maintains the rivet body stationary against the workpiece and the other has jaws thereon for gripping and pulling on the rivet mandrel to expand the rivet body and break away the mandrel. The hollow barrel also contains a vacuum tube through which broken-away mandrels are expelled.

  • Patent number: 4809568
Abstract: A barrel assembly includes a housing for attachement to a conventional driving tool. A barrel member having a through bore is slidably attached at one end to the housing and carries a stress plate retaining pad at the other end. A pre-assembled enlongated headed fastener and stress plate combination is inserted into the barrel assembly whereby, during driving, the head of the fastener is slidably guided by the barrel bore while the shank portion of the fastener is rigidly held by the locked stress plate assuring a perpendicular driving alignment between the fastener and the workpiece, such as a roof deck plate. Biasing means normally forces the barrel in an extended position relative to the housing and also permits the barrel and stress plate retaining pad to retract during a plate tapping sequence of the fastener to prevent thread stripping of the stress plate.

Abstract: The invention provides a multi-purpose safety device which can be used in conventional nailing operations to guide the nail to be driven safely, conveniently and quickly at a desired angle and which can be used for measuring angles and inclinations as well as levelling. The invention includes a driving member disposed in a sleeve which in turn mounted on an upper side of a housing, a nail advancing plate at one side of the housing for advancing nails, and a nail guiding body below the sleeve for guiding and positioning a nail beneath the driving member whereby the nail can be driven into an object by the driving member. An angle meter is further mounted in the housing for measuring angles as well as indicating a desired angle by which the nail has to be driven.

  • Patent number: 4782989
Abstract: A compensating nail-driving chuck uniformly countersinks nails into boards, despite variations in thickness and hardness of the boards. The nail-driving chuck has a chuck body with jaws at the lower end for holding a nail. A hydraulic cylinder has a drive rod which is connected to a drive pin for driving the nail out through the jaws and into the board. The chuck body is movable with the drive rod until a surface of the board is engaged. At that point, movement of the chuck body stops, and relative movement of the drive rod and drive pin with respect to the chuck body begins. The chuck body limits the stroke of the drive rod, so that the nail is driven a uniform distance into the board once the surface of the board has been engaged.
