  • Patent number: 4407202
Abstract: A railroad dump car, such as a side dump rail car, uses hydraulic actuators to tilt the dump body to permit unloading of the contents of the dump body. A hydraulic booster pump is connected to the auxiliary air supply of the train. The booster pump converts the relatively low pressure (about 90 psi) air to a high hydraulic pressure (about 3000 psi). In another embodiment, a bidirectional rotary pump driven from the rail car axle pumps the hydraulic fluid. The booster pump (or the bidirectional rotary pump) pumps hydraulic fluid from a hydraulic reservoir to a hydraulic accumulator, which receives the hydraulic fluid and stores the hydraulic fluid under pressure. When the hydraulic accumulator is fully charged, the operator triggers a valve to cause dumping. The valve causes the hydraulic accumulator means to supply the pressurized hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic actuators, which pivot the dump body with respect to the car frame to unload the contents of the dump body.

  • Patent number: 4382632
Abstract: A stabilizer system for automatically leveling the dump body of a rear dumping vehicle. The system is adapted to be employed with a tractor-trailer rig including an elongated pivot dumping body associated with a trailer. First and second hydraulic rams coupled to the front of the dump body are employed to tilt and simultaneously level the trailer dump body during unloading. The lower ends of the hydraulic rams terminate in pressure plate apparatus adapted to contact the driven, rear wheeled axles of the tractor unit. The pressure plates include a plurality of rollers rotatably secured to the pressure plate which support the weight transmitted by the rams while permitting rotation of the tractor tires. An electrical-hydraulic system controlled by a pivoted pendulum appropriately actuates the rams for leveling the apparatus. Thus the entire unit may be manuevered by the tractor while unloading and tilting the dump body, simultaneously with the automatic leveling function.
