  • Patent number: 5498067
Abstract: A combination lifting hinge and latching mechanism for a tailgate used on a refuse hauler and compactor. A hydraulically operated lifting hinge is comprised of three principle components, namely, a hydraulic cylinder, a bell crank and a cam plate secured to the tailgate. A pair of lifting assemblies is disposed at an upper location each side of the cylindrical compactor body such that it is not easily damaged, and further, allows the compactor body to extend laterally and vertically to the maximum highway guidelines. The lifting mechanism first lifts the tailgate from the locking position such that locking pins clear side spur latches before rotation. Due to the unique camming feature and a kidney-shaped slot in the cam plate, an over-center locking feature is provided. The tailgate cannot be inadvertently lifted from a locked position due to upward forces, such as the truck hitting a bump, even if the actuating cylinder should relax its holding forces, such as during a hydraulic failure.

  • Patent number: 4327455
Abstract: A surface cleaning machine and particularly a riding power sweeper is provided. The sweeper has a main rotary broom and an adjacent hopper with an inlet opening for receiving dirt and debris swept from the surface by the broom. The hopper has an outlet opening spaced from the inlet opening through which dirt and debris are emptied from the hopper, and a dumping door is located adjacent the outlet opening for opening and closing the outlet opening. The dumping mechanism for the hopper includes a single drive unit which is connected to the hopper and to the dumping door. When the hopper is to be dumped, the drive unit is operated to first open the dumping door to a position against a stop. After the door contacts the stop, continued operation of the drive unit moves the hopper to a tilted dumping position in which the dirt and debris are emptied through the open outlet opening.

  • Patent number: 4091944
Abstract: A front end loader refuse collection body for a motor vehicle including vertically movable container lifting arms for raising refuse containers over the body and dumping the contents thereof through an opening in the top of the body. The improvements include a simple mechanical linkage for automatically leveling the fork ends on the container while the arms are being raised. Maintaining the form arms, and the container retained therein, in a substantially level position while lifting the container, eliminates or greatly reduces spillage from the container before it is positioned over the refuse body opening. The improvements further include means for automatically opening and closing the doors covering the top body opening while lifting and lowering the container lifting arms, and a mechanical latching linkage for automatically unlocking and locking the rear door of the refuse body while opening and closing same, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4076310
Abstract: The invention is a lift for the gate of a truck, and especially a gate at the side of the truck. An L-shaped lift arm has base bars pivotally connected to an actuator mechanism beneath the bed of a truck. These arms swing to the side of the truck when extended and a lift bar on the base bars extends therefrom to engage the outside of a truck gate and the lift bar is angled from the base bars to push the gate upwardly to its closed position when the base bars are rotated to their extended position. The actuator mechanism includes two chain connected sprockets: a smaller sprocket at the base bar pivot and a larger sprocket connecting with the piston of a cylinder. The sprocket pitch diameter ratios are such that rotation of approximately 90.degree. by the larger sprocket will effect an 180.degree. rotation of the smaller sprocket, permitting the lift arm to swing from a fully retracted position underneath the body of the truck to a fully extended position where the lift bar closes the gate.

  • Patent number: 4051746
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the movement of a movable tail-gate hinged to a tipping body of a vehicle. A collapsible toggle linkage is pivotally connected at one end to a flap adapted to bear against the tail-gate and the opposite end of the linkage is pivotally connected to a support secured to the vehicle. The toggle linkage is moved between erect and collapsed conditions by a piston and cylinder assembly, the piston rod of said assembly being connected to the interconnected ends of the toggle linkage by a bracket. The bracket serves as a stop to prevent outwardly collapsing movement of the toggle linkage. The tail-gate can be maintained in a closed position independently of any forces exerted by the piston and cylinder assembly.

  • Patent number: 4052106
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a lift mechanism depicted to be utilized in conjunction with swingably mounted sideboards of truck boxes. The lift mechanism is so constructed wherein it will permit the swinging of a sideboard from an upright box-closing position to a depending position and return without the utilization of the lift mechanism, while at the same time the lift mechanism is actuable to either selectively position the sideboard in an intermediate position or to move the sideboard from an open position to a box-closing position.

  • Patent number: 3977718
Abstract: A turnable, generally box-girder-shaped gate for a truck platform with an operating device intended for actuation of the gate, comprising a drive device and a link coupling which is connected between the gate and the drive device for locking the gate in a non-activated state of the drive device. The link coupling includes a first link articulately connected to the gate and to a second link, the other end of the second link being fixedly connected to a stationary, but turnable, shaft. The shaft is connected via a third link to the drive device. In the locked position of the gate, the fulcrum of the first link with the second link lies along a substantially straight line which runs between the center of the shaft and the fulcrum between the first link and the gate in the non-activated state of the drive device. The fulcrum of the first link with the second link is arranged to be moved upwards by the drive device during unlocking of the gate.
