Compound Blade Movement Patents (Class 30/154)
  • Patent number: 11752613
Abstract: Embodiments are described for a simple convertible utility knife and scraper includes a handle, slide mechanism, and flat spring with a centrally mounted utility blade. The flat spring locks into precut positions in the handle to secure the blade in the desired position, whether in a cutting position or a scraping position. The blade can be partially extended to expose the front of the blade in the cutting position. When the slide is fully extended, the blade can rotate about a central axis to a position perpendicular to the handle and then be retracted into slots at the end of the handle to secure and support the blade in the scraper position.

  • Patent number: 10589436
Abstract: A single-action convertible utility knife and scraper includes a carriage and a slide mechanism slidably mounted within a housing. A blade support is pivotally mounted on the carriage for movements of a blade between cutting and scraper orientations. The carriage and the slide mechanism can be moved by an external button between a retracted position wherein the blade support is fully retracted within the housing, an extended position wherein the blade support is in an operative cutting or scraping position and a conversion position wherein the blade support is moved forwardly of the extended position to enable the blade support to transition from one orientation to another while clearing the housing. A bi-stable mechanism alternatingly pivots the blade support between the first and second orientations when the external button is successively advanced to move the slide mechanism forwardly beyond the extended position to incrementally advanced positions.

  • Patent number: 8732957
Abstract: A knife has a housing, an operating part shiftable on the housing between advanced and retracted positions, and a blade holder connected to the part and carrying a blade. The holder is shiftable on the part between offset first and second cutting positions with the blade projecting from the front end and a safety position with the blade recessed in the housing rearward of the front end. A spring biases the holder into the safety position. A brace element can shift between a position braced between the blade holder and the housing in the first cutting position and a position out of engagement with the blade holder or the housing in the second cutting position. The brace element when engaged holds the blade in the first cutting position but in the second cutting position is disengaged so the spring returns the holder to the safety position.

Abstract: A folding knife includes a handle portion and a blade pivotally coupled to the handle portion for pivoting movement between an open position and a closed position. The knife can include a locking mechanism that retains the blade against pivoting movement when it is in the open position. In particular embodiments, the blade is coupled to the handle portion such that the application of pressure to the blade in a predetermined direction causes displacement of blade relative to the handle portion in the plane within which the blade pivots. The displacement of the blade relative to the handle portion is effective to release the blade from the locking mechanism and allow the blade to be pivoted to the closed position.

  • Patent number: 6438849
Abstract: To automatically retract the blade after cutting, a flat serpentine spring is integrally formed with a thumb piece which is slidably received in a slot formed along the upper edge of a housing/handle. The housing has a finger rest projection on the lower edge to facilitate cutting while the blade is projected with the thumb. The two halves of the housing snap together using a block-like projection formed on one half, and a pair of tabs formed on the other. The tabs, which are resilient, slide along the sides of the projection until recesses on each of the side of the projection are reached. Inwardly extending ridges on the ends of the tabs enter the recesses to provide a click lock. An aperture between the tabs allows pressure to be applied to the top of the projection to separate the two halves for blade reset/re-adjustment. The blade carrier, which is adapted to support two different types of blades, is slidably mounted in the housing so that it and the thumb piece are free of detents or click-locks.

  • Patent number: 5293690
Abstract: In a folding knife or hand tool having a handle and a blade pivotally connected to the handle, a spring loaded crossbolt 1 is fitted to the blade tang. One end of crossbolt 1 protrudes through an arcuate slot in the handle, crossbolt slot 32. A locking collar 19 on crossbolt 1 engages locking counterbores A 34 and B 36 located on the blade side of the opposite ends of crossbolt slot 32. When finger pressure is applied to the end of crossbolt 1, locking collar 19 is forced to disengage locking counterbore A 34 and retreat to a relieved area on the blade, collar relief 52. This permits the blade to be extended by forward finger pressure on crossbolt 1. When the blade is fully extended, spring pressure forces locking collar 19 into the opposite locking counterbore B 36, thus locking the blade. Reversing the sequence will close and lock the blade.
