Abstract: Methods and systems for extending the shelf life of produce are disclosed which provide an accelerated drying process for washed produce in order to further clean and fully crystallize a layer of solute-laden slurry that has been applied on the external surface of an item of produce (20). The drying process typical comprises three basic steps. The first step (10) is to mechanically remove excess moisture from the solute-laden slurry to form a moisture-reduced slurry layer (22) on the external surface of the item of produce (20). The second step (12) is to employ heat and/or light energy to accelerate the in-situ moisture removal process to create a protective stratum (24) on the external surface of the item of produce (20). The third step (14) is to further remove remaining moisture to permit the formation of crystalline structures (26) on the external surface of the item of produce (20).

Abstract: A drier 8 is disposed within a sterile chamber 14. If a vessel 10 stays within the drier for a prolonged length of time, it will be deformed under heat, and accordingly, it is taken out by a reject wheel 28 and dropped onto a discharge chute 30 which is disposed below it. A downstream portion of the discharge chute is surrounded by a second sterile chamber 36 which is separate from the first mentioned sterile chamber, and a glove 38 mounted on the wall of the chamber 36 allows an access to the discharge chute while maintaining the chute in a sterile condition. A door 40 which can be opened and closed is mounted on the wall 36a of the second chamber, and the rejected vessel is discharged through the door which is then opened. Chambers 14 and 36 are disposed within a processing chamber 4.

  • Patent number: 6446355
Abstract: Liquid is removed from disks by apparatus and methods for drying a disk that has been wet in a liquid bath. The disk and the bath are separated at a controlled rate to form a monolayer of liquid on the disk as the disk is positioned in a gas-filled volume. The separation may be by moving the disk out of the liquid bath, and the controlled rate is generally not less than the maximum rate at which a meniscus will form between the liquid bath and the surface of the disk when the liquid bath and the disk are separated. The gas-filled volume is defined by a hot chamber that continuously transfers thermal energy to the disk in the gas-filled volume. Hot gas directed into the volume and across the disk and out of the volume continuously transfers thermal energy to the disk. The directing of the gas out of the volume is independent of the separation of the bath and the disk.

Abstract: For the treatment of surfaces of substrates of organic or inorganic materials, reactive fragments—especially radicals or ions—are produced by ultraviolet radiation; the ultraviolet radiation is performed by at least one ultraviolet radiator disposed at a given distance, with a gas-filled, elongated discharge chamber whose walls are formed by a dielectric, which is provided on the side facing away from the discharge chamber with at least one electrode; during the irradiation a translational and/or rotatory relative movement is performed between the substrate and the ultraviolet radiator at a comparatively slight distance between radiator and substrate surface, in order to achieve, in a simple manner, an intense and uniform illumination of the surface being irradiated.

  • Patent number: 6108932
Abstract: A method for thermocapillary drying of substrates includes the step of elevating a submerged substrate away from a rinsing liquid. Such movement of the substrate forms a meniscus on opposite sides of the substrate. The curved raised portion of the meniscus at each side of the substrate is gently heated in such a way as to induce thermocapillary flows, which cause the rinsing fluid to flow away from the substrate so that the withdrawing substrate may be pulled out dry and clean. Heating may be accomplished by directing a warm gas onto the meniscus or by heating the meniscus with rays from a radiation/light source. Apparatus is also provided for performing the various method steps.
