  • Patent number: 7562435
Abstract: The sensitivity of the ABS shape of a suspension mounted slider to temperature variations can be greatly reduced if the backside of the slider is lapped to a smooth convex contour that is similar to the ABS shape, rather than to a planar shape, prior to mounting the slider on the suspension. When the backside surfaces of sliders are shaped in this manner, the size of changes in the crown height of the ABS shape due to temperature variations are greatly reduced and the ABS shapes are distributed more tightly, thereby increasing disk drive reliability.

  • Patent number: 7461446
Abstract: A method is presented for repairing damaged photomasks for electronic component fabrication processes, particularly for fabrication of the ABS of a disk drive slider. The method includes applying an overcoat of material having index of fraction which is close to the index of refraction of the photoresist material of the damaged photomask to produce a non-scattering boundary surface. The overcoat material preferably includes an overcoat base material which is a polymer having an index of refraction which is in the range of plus or minus 0.1 from the index of refraction of said photoresist material.

  • Patent number: 7455332
Abstract: The overcoat of a slider (alumina) is recessed relative to the slider ABS by a non-abrasive CMP process sufficiently to prevent thermal protrusion of the overcoat during subsequent slider use in a hard disk drive. The CMP process involves the oscillatory and rotational compressional contact between the ABS surface of the slider and a polymerically pre-treated compliant pad that is sprayed by an aqueous alkali lubricating solution having a pH between about 9 and 10. The overcoat is thereby also softened by the lubricating solution and removed by the compressional contact and no use of abrasives is required.

  • Publication number: 20080088974
Abstract: The head slider allows the first protection film having the first thickness to cover over the top surface of the rail. The second protection film having the first thickness covers over the surface of the insulating non-magnetic film at a position downstream of the rail. The third protection film having the second thickness smaller than the first thickness covers over the write gap of the head element at a position downstream of the rail. Even when the head element protrudes from the surface of the insulating non-magnetic film, the third protection film is prevented from getting closer to the recording medium beyond the first and second protection films. The head element is prevented from contacting with the recording medium. This results in avoidance of damages to the head slider.

  • Patent number: 7125467
Abstract: A process for fabricating sliders where the sliders are held in place during processing by a solid matrix material is described. A thin coating of a release-layer material is applied on the sliders before encapsulation in the matrix material. The release-layer material is polyvinyl alcohol and more preferably high molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol which is highly hydrolyzed. Use of the release-layer of the invention maintains the process resistance while providing the advantage of allowing easier removal of the matrix material after it is no longer needed. The release-layer can be applied to encapsulant materials including epoxies, acrylates, polyimides, silsesquioxanes and others. After the selected fabrication process such as the formation of air-bearing features an appropriate solvent is applied to soften the polyvinyl alcohol film and allow clean debonding of the sliders.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a compact, seal-less, centrifugal liquid pump with a perimeter magnetic drive that is substantially smaller than a conventional centrifugal liquid pump having magnets attached directly to the impeller shaft. Because rotational force is applied at the perimeter of the impeller, rather than at the shaft, embodiments of the invention have lower torque requirements and rotational speed, increasing the life of the pump bearings. Additionally, embodiments of the invention may suspend the pump bearings by using a redirected flow of liquid coolant, further increasing the bearing life.
