Abstract: A carriage drive control device is provided which moves a carriage at a constant speed in a recording area for recording operation and which moves the carriage to a target stop position in a better way for non-recording operation. A controlled variable of actuator is calculated based on a speed error between a target speed and a moving speed of the carriage. The target speed is set based on a position error between the target stop position and a current position of the carriage, and is not more than a predetermined first speed. When the actuator starts moving the carriage for recording operation, a control rule used for calculation of the controlled is set to a first control rule, and when the actuator starts moving the carriage for non-recording operation, the control rule is set to a second control rule.

Abstract: A serial printer includes a carriage reciprocating in a main scanning direction, a reading sensor mounted in carriage, a timing fence arranged in the main scanning direction, a mechanism preventing movement of carriage in the main scanning direction, and a controlling portion detecting a set condition for image formation in accordance with read data of timing fence from reading sensor for controlling image formation. Controlling portion detects the set condition for image formation only in accordance with the read data of timing fence, so that detection of the set condition for image formation is enabled without increasing the size of an apparatus and cost, or without decreasing a processing efficiency in image formation.

Abstract: An indexing stop is moveable relative to a printer carriage that carries cartridges for printing a swath at a time. Part of the stop is in the path that the carriage travels. The stop is advanced while the cartridges print one, "first" swath (that is, while the carriage is stationary). The stop is advanced to a position corresponding to the location where the carriage is to be moved to facilitate printing of the next, "second" swath. Once the first swath is printed, the carriage is controlled to move toward and abut the stop, thus arriving in the location for printing the second swath. The stop simplifies and speeds the carriage movement between swaths, thereby increasing printer throughput.

Abstract: A typewriter may store a document in a first format with margins and tab stop locations defined for a first format and then the operator may change the margin or tabs to a second format. The operator may also select whether the tab stop locations may be played out with the same relative positioning to the left margin or be played out using the newly set tabs and margin setting. The newly set tab stop locations are defined as a fixed position relative to the print line and are independent of the left margin position or the position of the original tab stop location relative to the left margin.The memory of the typewriter may be optionally updated when the document is played out using the second format tab stop locations, if the operator conditions the storage to accept changes during playout. Alternatively, the document may be played out using the second format tab stop locations, and the original format tab stop locations are maintained for future use.

Abstract: A character printing system in an electronic data processing apparatus is provided that is adapted for printing language characters in response to numerical value coded data entered through numeral keys of a keyboard, each character being represented by a respective numerical value coded data of a predetermined convention, wherein said language characters comprises at least two kinds of language characters, such as upper case type alphabet characters and lower case type alphabet characters, or English alphabet characters and Japanese kana characters, or the like, and the keyboard includes language character code entry mode key and language character kind specifying key as well as numeral keys and ordinary commanding keys, and a printer operable responsive to a storage for storing information entered through said keyboard is controlled by a print control responsive to said storage, whereby said printer is controlled to selectively print numerical value coded data in a kind of language characters specified by t
