  • Patent number: 4953640
Abstract: A quick detach bit apparatus includes a wear sleeve having a chuck threaded thereinto. A bit is mounted within the chuck. The bit and chuck are interconnected by mating, axially extending splines and grooves. The chuck includes a resiliently mounted segment urged into engagement with the bit. A quick release tool is accommodated in a passage between the bit and chuck. The tool is inserted into the passage and has a thickness sufficient to urge the segment out of engagement with the bit so that the bit is removed from the chuck.

  • Patent number: 4654948
Abstract: A drill bit has a formation engaging face through which a plurality of counterbores are formed. A stud assembly having a polycrystalline diamond face thereon is forced into the counterbore in a close tolerance relationship therewith thereby providing frictional forces which prevent movement of the stud assembly respective to the drill bit. A passageway leads from the bottom of the counterbore back to a wall surface of the bit and emerges in spaced relationship respective to the entrance of the counterbore. Hydraulic pressure is effected within the passageway, thereby moving the stud assembly with a piston-like action. The stud assembly is next rotated to bring a new cutting face into cutting position. A tool, made in accordance with the present invention, forces the stud assembly back into the counterbore.

  • Patent number: 4545706
Abstract: A method and machine for machining the surface of a valve seat (3) which is required to have a very accurate alignment with respect to a guide bore of a valve guide (2).In order to be capable of machining the valve seat surface in high roundness while maintaining a high concentricity with the guide bore, a pilot member (4) is moved forward inclinably to catch a guide bore of a valve guide (2) at its front end; the pilot member is further moved forward bendably while following the guide bore; when the pilot member has reached the desired position, the posture of the pilot member in the position is firmly held; and the surface of the valve seat (3) is machined by moving edged tool members (5a) forwardly while rotating the edged tool members (5a) which are arranged coaxially with the pilot member.

  • Patent number: 4541758
Abstract: The present invention includes an insert securably mountable within the chamber of a core drill, such as a chamfering diamond core drill used for drilling and chamfering glass articles. The insert preferably includes a first diverting facility for diverting a first portion of a lubricating/cooling fluid from within the core drill to the inner drilling surfaces of the core drill, and a second diverting facility for diverting a second portion of the lubricating/cooling fluid to the outer drilling surface and chamfering surface of the core drill, to prevent thermal damage to the article being drilled and chamfered, during both the drilling and chamfering steps. The present invention further includes a method of lubricating/cooling an article during drilling and chamfering operations with lubricating/cooling fluid from within the core drill, to prevent thermal damage to the article being drilled.

  • Patent number: 4483108
Abstract: A drill bit suitable for making holes in glass and ceramic structures has an elongated member with a cutting end and a retaining end with an axis passing through its ends. The portion of the member near the retaining end is formed as a shank which is capable of being suitably held and rotated by a chuck or the like. The shank distal to the retaining end terminates in a shoulder which tapers inwardly toward a pilot element which extends axially from the center of the shoulder coaxial with the shank. The pilot element terminates in a cutting surface with the cutting surface forming the forwardmost portion of the cutting end of the member. A cutting grit is permanently affixed at least to the cutting surface on the pilot element, the shoulder and the portion of the shank immediately adjacent to the shoulder.

  • Patent number: 4158522
Abstract: A tool shaft is detachably fastened in a tool holder by means of a plurality of gaskets which are each sandwiched between a pair of press rings. The tool shaft extends through the press rings and gaskets. A screw is provided for compressing the gaskets between the press rings. The gaskets are disposed in recesses of larger volume. The gaskets are nonsymmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the tool shaft. When compressed, the gaskets force the tool shaft laterally against the rings to prevent radial misalignment of the tool shaft.

  • Patent number: 4111208
Abstract: A process and apparatus for drilling holes in hard materials in surgical procedures, comprising driving a drilling tool with a movement of alternating rotation with an amplitude of less than one revolution. The tool can be driven from a motor having unidirectional continuous rotatable movement through a convertor which transforms this movement into the alternating rotation. The drilling tool can covered by a member which feeds the waste cutting materials rearwardly into an enclosed chamber. The apparatus can also be provided with a member that covers the drill during an insertion thereof through cut tissue prior to the drilling operation.

  • Patent number: 4088417
Abstract: A drill may be fed into a workpiece at a rate where the angle descent is less than the primary relief angle of the drill and wherein the extruding action takes place in 1/3 or less of the drill diameter. Unachieved rates of drill feed speed with high precision may be achieved without punching or crushing the material of the workpiece. In order to accomplish such drilling rates an improved feed mechanism, utilizing a positively driven lead screw is employed. In addition, in order to utilize the high drilling rate, a multiple bank of spindles is devised having an X-Y adjustable configuration used in combination with a worktable translated by a lead screw and nut combination. The lead screw of the worktable is disposed within the worktable in the proximity of the axis of symmetry to the worktable in order to minimize twisting moments to the worktable.

  • Patent number: 4053249
Abstract: An apparatus and method for precision overboring a variable diameter existing bore through a metal shaft supported in a position that causes the shaft to sag along its longitudinal axis. A plurality of precision-formed tool pilots are selectively mounted ahead of a spade bit on a rotary boring tool to maintain the path of the bit through the shaft-workpiece within a predetermined tolerance of the path followed by an existing bore. A plurality of fluted follower bearings are positioned around the tool driving shaft to minimize its vibration as the bit proceeds through the workpiece. Liquid coolant is passed at high volume into engagement with the bit and thence through the follower bearing exhaust passageways to flush metal shavings and chips from the overbore. According to the method of the invention, tool vibration is carefully monitored as the bit is forced into the workpiece.
