Abstract: A process for loading a lathe in which a new bar to be machined is introduced laterally into a guide-bar device in form of a tube during the machining of a last piece at the end of a preceding bar. The new bar causes the ejection of the remnant of the preceding bar by pushing against the rear of the preceding bar. A device for loading a lathe with bars to be machined comprises a guide-bar device in form of a tube having two parts which can be opened for laterally introducing a new bar to be machined into the tube. The bar in the tube is fed by a hydraulically controlled push-piston. Pressure pistons press the two parts of the tube against each other in order to ensure a fluid tight seal. Return pistons are utilized radially move the upper part of the tube at the time of loading.

Abstract: A device for withdrawing from a bar pusher and thereafter unloading the crop-ends of metal bars in a bar feeding apparatus for a multi-spindle lathe, the device being suitable also for placing a new bar on the bar pusher, is disclosed; the device of the invention is comprised essentially of a pair of movable jaws which by a turning movement close onto the crop-end of a metal bar and lock the crop-end therebetween; the crop-end is the residual part of the lathe machining of the metal bar; thereafter the jaws accomplish a translation movement to detach the crop-end from a bar pusher which formerly caused the bar forwarding in the feeding apparatus of the lathe; the jaws thereafter open slowly dropping the crop-end in a proper unloading zone; finally the jaws close onto a new metal bar to be machined and, by a further translation movement in the direction opposite to the former one, perform the insertion of the new metal bar end into the bar pusher.

Abstract: A machine for supporting bar feed stock in a turning tool. The machine includes a main tube having a cylindrical inner wall and an intermediate guide tube rotatably mounted inside the main tube. The intermediate guide tube has a cylindrical outer wall and an interior elongated opening. The interior of the intermediate guide tube receives the workpiece with an end portion of the workpiece extending into a spindle of the turning tool and with the interior opening fitting closely around the bar feed stock. The intermediate guide tube is connected to the spindle to rotate therewith and with the workpiece. Liquid in the main tube surrounds the intermediate guide tube. The intermediate guide tube tends to become centered in the main tube as the spindle turns.

  • Patent number: 4596170
Abstract: A bar stock guiding device for use with automatic lathes comprises two cushions which have the shape of semicylindrical annuli. The cushions are applied against each other in a recess of a freely rotatable sleeve. This sleeve is located between the lathe and a tube of the guiding device which contains the bar of stock fed to the lathe. The sleeve normally rotates with the bar of stock, because the opening appearing between the cushions is adjusted with minimal small free play only to avoid whipping of the bar in the cushions and the propagation of vibrations to the stock bar part extending in the working area of the tools. When the pusher passes through the sleeve, it ejects the cushions out of the sleeve recess. Before this ejection occurs, a braking mechanism reduces the speed of rotation of the sleeve to a substantial extent.

Abstract: Feed apparatus for automatic lathes comprises a central section bar surrounded by one or more peripheral section bars, longitudinal grooves of arcuate cross-section in all the section bars matching and cooperating with each other to form longitudinal passages for guiding bar stock when the section bars are assembled. Linings may be placed in these passages to form tubes for guiding the bar stock, these tubes being very accurately positioned relative to the outer surface of the apparatus, which may be an outer tube into which the assembly of section bars is inserted. Hence the stock-guiding tubes can be more precisely positioned, and the apparatus can be produced at low cost because the section bars are inexpensive and assembly is simple. The apparatus is particularly suitable for feeding lathes on which objects made from bar stock of very different diameters has to be machined.

A defective, incomplete or "break-out" package is disposed at a stripping station at which a tube deforming or collapsing member is engaged with a forming tube package to collapse the package so that the strand on the collapsed forming tube is loose or is a loose hank. The collapsed or deformed forming tube is withdrawn from the stripping station and a stripper member is engaged with the loose strand or hank of strand which is stripped from the forming tube as the forming tube is moved away from the stripping station.

The bender includes a base, bending head at the forward end of the base, carriage for positioning a tube with respect to the bending head, and a mandrel rod supporting on its front end near the bending head a mandrel. The improvement includes the use of two separate clamps for gripping the mandrel rod with respect to the base, one clamp being located near the rear end of the mandrel rod and the other clamp at an intermediate point on the mandrel rod spaced from the first clamp a distance at least equal to the length of the tubes to be bent. The clamps selectively grasp the mandrel rod, at least one clamp grasping the rod at any given time, to allow a tube to be loaded onto the mandrel rod while another tube is being bent.

  • Patent number: 4423651
Abstract: A hydraulically operated bar stock feeder having a hydraulic circuit in which a hydraulic pump drives a hydraulic motor which in turn operates the bar feeder carriage. The hydraulic pump operates a hydraulic cylinder with a designed live center cup attached to the end of the cylinder rod. The hydraulic circuit has a control valve with hydraulic detent which will lock in a forward or backward position. While the control valve is locked in forward position, fluid is allowed to go to a relief valve at the hydraulic motor on the carriage. The relief valve reduces the pressure going to hydraulic motor and deceleration valve. When the carriage reaches the end of track the deceleration valve is depressed, which, through another relief valve at a lower pressure starts the cylinder rod moving outward. Both the cylinder and carriage motor are able to set (not move) under pressure and will start automatically when the lathe chuck is open.
