Loading Or Unloading A Railway Car By Utilizing The Tractor Of A Tractor Trailer, Load-transporting Type Vehicle To Maneuver The Trailer, Or A Part Thereof, Onto Or Off The Car Patents (Class 414/333)
  • Patent number: 10017337
Abstract: A rail-road intermodal freight system. In an embodiment, a conveyor system is provided for placing rail cars in a position for loading shipping containers thereon, while an over-the-road trailer is secured to the rail car. Rail cars have a frame with a front end and a rear end, and a bogie having at least four flanged rail wheels is pivotally mounted to the rear of the frame of the rail car. A method for unloading the rail cars includes lifting the front of the frame of the rail cars and pivoting the rail cars by an angle alpha from the track direction at an unloading area, and lowering the front end of the frame to the ground to allow truck access to trailers on the rail car. By utilizing the method, efficient loading and unloading of train involved in intermodal shipments may save considerable time, and thus reduce costs.

Abstract: A linkage clamping system that may be used both for moving a clamp laterally and for rotating the clamp. The device includes a linear actuator, a rotational linkage assembly, and a clamping member. The linear actuator may first rotate the clamp, then move the clamp laterally, or may be configured to move the clamp laterally first, then rotate it. Both the lateral and rotational movements are achieved in distinct motions with a single linear actuator. The clamp may be rotated about 180 degrees and the lateral movement may only be limited by the lateral movement provided by the linear actuator. The linkage clamping system may be used to secure equipment, such as a material handler for unloading an open top railroad car.

Abstract: A renewable energy system for directly charging electric and hybrid vehicles is shown for areas with modest wind resources and/or solar resources. The invention consists of a composite stanchion for mounting on a base in a parking lot that is both capable of supporting a medium sized wind turbine (or solar array) and serving as a battery storage and charging control station. Significant improvements in blade pitch adjustment and cost reduction for wind turbine blades allow the system to operate at an acceptable cost in areas with modest winds and avoid the need for remotely supplied renewable electricity in areas of high population density. In turn, this will allow for increased electrical grid stability through increased use of distributed generation.

  • Patent number: 5017064
Abstract: An intermodal transport system designed for use in the hauling of semi-trailers by means of railway bogies. The system combines a turntable and spring-loaded chock design to enable the efficient loading and unloading of semi-trailers. A novel turntable design reduces bending stresses in transit while the combined chock reduces labor requirements during the loading and unloading processes since an automatic locking in place is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4946324
Abstract: A railroad car adapted to receive at least one container from a truck positioned along the railroad car includes a deck mounted on wheels and at least one turntable rotatably mounted on the deck. The turntable includes a pair of spaced, parallel guide tracks which can slidably receive and support a container. A shuttle bar extends transversely across and is slidably mounted on the deck. The shuttle bar is connected to the turntable so that sliding movement of the shuttle bar rotates the turntable between a position in which the guide tracks extend longitudinally along the deck and a position in which the guide tracks extend across the width of the deck. The shuttle bar has hooks on its ends which can be engaged by a bail on the truck to allow the truck to move the shuttle bar and thus rotate the turntable.

  • Patent number: 4190393
Abstract: Trailers are loaded on and unloaded from railroad flatcars by use of a system including tractors to pull the trailers, an end ramp at the end of the train, and a movable side ramp structure at the side of the train. The movable ramp structure has a ramp and a retractable bridge extending from the top of the ramp to the top of a flatcar in the train. In unloading, a tractor drives up the movable ramp and across the bridge to get onto the flatcar. Then the bridge is retracted, the tractor hitches onto one of the trailers, and pulls it along the joined beds of the flatcars and down the end ramp. The tractor then takes the trailer to a storage area, unhitches the trailer, and returns to the movable ramp structure to repeat the process. While the first tractor is pulling the trailer along the tops of the flatcars, the movable ramp structure moves to a position near the next trailer to be unloaded, and extends the bridge again.

  • Patent number: 4179997
Abstract: A system for moving freight carriers including highway semi-trailers and receptacles such as demountable containers and merchandise racks in trains on railway tracks includes railway trucks, each slidably mounting a transversely centered fifth wheel support to permit its positioning at different locations longitudinally of the truck and swivelly mounting a pair of longitudinally disposed structures each including a pair of transversely spaced treadways for supporting semi-trailer highway wheels such that the highway wheels at the rear of one semi-trailer can be supported on one wheel supporting structure and the fifth wheel support can be positioned between the treadways of the other wheel supporting structure to support the front end of another semi-trailer, whereby a plurality of semi-trailer and railway trucks are linkable into a train with the front end of the leading semi-trailer supported on the fifth wheel support of a road-rail tractor.
