  • Patent number: 8393856
Abstract: The volute is cast integrally with the gearbox base to allow closer radial tolerances to be used to improve efficiency. In the preferred embodiment, compressors for multi-stage compression are assembled with intercoolers and the integral volute is cast together with the impeller housing and the lower gearbox housing and the associated intercooler. Efficiency increases of 2% or more are achievable. In multistage applications, efficiency gains in the early stages are compounded in each subsequent stage. Speed changes that change center distance between bull gear and pinion are accommodated by an offset opening in the inlet and diffuser that can line up with the impeller shaft as well as an offset opening in the fluid seal despite a pinion gear change, by reorientation and remounting of those parts.

  • Patent number: 7789628
Abstract: Injection molded ring fan embodiments and methods for making them. The methods influence material flow during the injection molding process such that a major portion of the materials flowing in opposite directions in the outer rings preferably flow past one another, intermix in a swirling relationship, and/or collide at an angle relative to one another. This results in better material mixing or integration of the flow fronts. In one embodiment, the thickness of the outer ring varies in different portions between adjacent fan blades.

  • Patent number: 7168922
Abstract: A method to influence material flow during the injection molding of thermoplastic, polymeric ring type fans such that a major portion of the materials flowing in opposite directions preferably flow past one another, or collide at an angle relative to one another, rather than colliding at an 180 degree angle relative to each other to form weld lines. This flow bypassing results in better material mixing or integrating than merely allowing flow fronts to collide and cool. In one embodiment, a portion of the fan's ring is thickened in the weld line area to minimize the amount of material colliding at a 180-degree angle relative to each. Alternatively, at least one appendage could be added to the ring fan that will influence the material flow during molding conditions. Each appendage will be removed prior to introducing the ring fan to a cooling system.

Abstract: An pump casing for a sheet metal pump includes a pump body made by pressing or roll forming a sheet metal, a reinforced member which includes a water guide unit and a flange unit separately made by casting or CNC machining and a seal ring engaged with the water guide unit. The pump body is a simple basin shape which can be produced with less stress concentration. The water guide unit may be made with a more precise volute for achieving better pumping efficiency. The reinforced member may increase structural strength of the pump casing for withstanding greater pumping pressure and external forces. The seal ring may be positioned precisely without dislocation because it engages with the water guide unit rather than the pump casing. The gap between the seal ring and the impeller may be kept small and constant, thus obtaining better pumping efficiency, lower operation noise and greater durability.

Abstract: A pump seal flushing ring (12) for a vehicle fluid pump (10) includes a top portion (22) and a bottom portion (20) and a tapered wall (36) extending therebetween. The bottom portion (20) has an opening (28) formed therein for communicating with a pump seal (52) to seal off the fluid chamber of the pump from the mechanical portion of the pump. The tapered wall (36) has a plurality of holes (48) formed therein that are uniformly spaced about the periphery of the tapered wall (36) to evenly communicate fluid to all portions of the seal (52).

  • Patent number: 6030176
Abstract: A structural member is provided for an exhaust-gas connection of a turbomachine, in particular a steam turbine, and a turbomachine bearing disposed in the exhaust-gas connection. The structural member is cast in one piece and has a connection part and/or a bearing part for accommodating the bearing as well as a supporting arm configuration with at least one supporting arm. A pipe conduit which is cast into the structural member leads through a connection part, a supporting arm and a bearing part. A set of at least two such structural members form an exhaust-gas connection and a frame for the bearing of the turbomachine.

  • Patent number: 5947682
Abstract: A pump housing and manufacturing method therefor includes a primary molding for injecting halves of the pump housing and a secondary molding for assembling the primary molds to each other to be installed to the interior of a secondary metal mold and secondarily-molding the outer surface of the pump housing without requiring core fabrication, installation and removal steps of the injection molding. Thus, the core fabrication and core removal steps heretofore required for an inlet or undercut are unnecessary for enabling swift mass production and lowering difficulty of working to make the quality consistent and decrease inferior products, thereby reducing the manufacturing cost.

  • Patent number: 5823753
Abstract: An electrically driven air pump has a housing incorporating an electric motor in one section of the housing and a pump mechanism coupled to the motor in another section of the housing. The housing has a pump cover enclosing the pump mechanism, made of plastic and having an end wall to which a metal reinforcement member is joined by injection molding. The metal reinforcement member is formed as a ring having inner and outer perimetral surfaces and a plurality of radial slots are formed in the ring for passage of the plastic material therethrough to anchor the reinforcement member to the end wall. The slots extend from the inner perimetral surface of the ring towards the outer perimetral surface but terminate before reaching the outer perimetral surface. The outer perimetral surface of the metal reinforcement member is free and unobstructed for undergoing dimensional change due to temperature variation.

  • Patent number: 5655875
Abstract: A torque converter stator made by injection molding of plastic material includes a metallic one-way clutch outer race which is insert molded within the stator hub. A plurality of recesses forming lubricant passages extend through the wall of a radial flange of the hub. The lubrication recess (30) is defined by a part-cylindrical outer wall (32) and a pair of planar side walls (34) spaced apart by a distance d. The juncture of the outer wall (32) and the side wall (34) is filleted to form a rounded corner (36) having a radius of curvature R1. To relieve the weld line (60) from concentration of residual stress due to post-molding shrinkage while avoiding stress concentration at the rounded corners (36), the ratio R1/d is selected to be 0.18-0.35.

  • Patent number: 5290143
Abstract: A bicast vane and shroud rings is provided in which thermal stresses are minimized. The vane has a flange portion along its inner and outer edge. These flange portions extend from the mid-chord of the vane part way towards the leading and trailing edges and follow the camber of the vane. Each of the flange portions has a width greater than that of the vane so has to form an overhang or lip about which conventional shroud rings are cast. As the flange portions approach the leading and trailing edges their width decreases and the overhang blends into the inner and outer edge to form rounded tops and bottoms at the leading and trailing edge. These rounded tops and bottoms reduce stress concentrations in the shroud rings and increase shroud material near these edges. Additionally, a stress relieving member is provided that embraces the top and bottom edges of the thin trailing edge, and inhibits the melting of the trailing edge during bicasting.

Abstract: A marine propeller including an inner hub to receive a driving connection to the engine and an outer hub is spaced outwardly from the inner hub to provide a passage therebetween for the discharge of exhaust gas from the engine. A plurality of blades extend outwardly from the outer hub. A propeller is die cast from an aluminum alloy and as cast the outer surface hub is cylindrical in configuration. After casting the trailing end of the outer hub is swaged outwardly by a tapered tool to provide an outwardly flared trailing end, which assists gas flow and enhances performance of the engine.

  • Patent number: 5122032
Abstract: A disposable pump assembly adapted to be driven by a motor through an elongated shaft. The disposable pump assembly includes a pump body having a volute portion and an elongated riser portion extending upwardly from the volute portion. The riser portion is integrally joined to the volute portion by a neck defining a restricted opening leading from the riser portion to the volute portion. The elongated shaft is adapted to be inserted into the riser portion, through the restricted and into the volute portion of the pump body. The disposable pump assembly also includes a shaft-receiving impeller disposed in the volute portion of the pump body for driven movement by the motor. The impeller and the elongated shaft each have correspondingly shaped portions for interconnecting and driving the impeller upon insertion of the shaft through the riser portion and into the volute portion of the pump body.
