  • Patent number: 8459966
Abstract: A ram air fan assembly includes a ram air fan disposed at a fan inlet and a ram air fan motor operably connected to the ram air fan. A blower is operably connected to the ram air fan and is configured to redirect a cooling flow across the ram air fan motor from a substantially axially directed flow to a substantially radially directed flow thereby increasing the cooling flow across the ram air fan motor. A method of cooling a ram air fan assembly includes urging a cooling flow toward the ram air fan motor and is directed across the ram air fan motor thus removing thermal energy from the ram air fan motor. The cooling flow proceeds across a blower operably connected to the ram air fan motor, thus directing the cooling flow substantially radially outwardly toward the fan inlet.

  • Patent number: 8292599
Abstract: In a method of operating a compressor at startup, the compressor is rotated in reverse for a brief period of time. The compressor is of a type that does not compress liquid when rotated in reverse. The purpose is to boil off the liquid refrigerant from the oil by heating and agitating the mixture of oil and refrigerant in the oil sump. This results in a much more benign forward start as less refrigerant is drawn into the compressor pump and the amount of oil pumped out of the compressor on start up is minimized. Also, the viscosity of oil is increased and lubrication of the bearings is improved. After a short period of time reverse rotation is stopped and the compressor can start rotating in the forward direction. The short period of time of reverse rotation is varied based upon system conditions. In one embodiment, the variation can occur by reducing the reverse run time as ambient temperature increases.

  • Patent number: 7821215
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a method of detecting a fault condition in a motor of a pump. The method includes sensing a first current value and a speed of the motor, attempting a recovery operation if the first current value is greater than a current threshold and if the speed of the motor is less than a motor speed low threshold, and sensing a second current value during the recovery operation and shutting down a drive to the motor if the second current value is also greater than the current threshold. The method also includes performing the recovery operation for a time period if the second current value is less than the current threshold and attempting to operate the motor in a normal mode after the time period has elapsed.

  • Patent number: 7040107
Abstract: An air conditioner has a variable capacity rotary compressor, which allows the compressor to be smoothly re-started, thus increasing start reliability of the compressor. The air conditioner includes a compressor rotated in opposite directions. A drive unit rotates the compressor in a forward or reverse direction. A start determining unit determines whether the compressor has started to rotate in a forward direction or not. A control unit operates the drive unit so as to rotate the compressor in a direction opposite to the forward direction, and then re-start the compressor in the forward direction, when the compressor has failed to start. The air conditioner and a method of controlling the air conditioner allow the compressor to be smoothly and rapidly re-started even when the compressor has failed to re-start, thus increasing start reliability, and shortening a time required to re-start the compressor.

  • Patent number: 7033145
Abstract: A centrifugal pump for a household appliance includes a synchronous alternating current electrical motor having a permanent magnet rotor and a bladed impeller coupled to an end of the rotor which extends into a cavity in the hub thereof. The rotor and the hub are provided with transverse coupling formations, respectively, which have angular extensions with angular play between the rotor and the impeller for promoting the starting of the motor. The rotor coupling formation includes a transverse appendage on a rigid drive body secured to the rotor, and a resilient damping formation molded onto the drive body and having two end portions for engaging the impeller coupling formation, and an intermediate portion which interconnects the end portions and extends at least partially through the drive body so that the damping formation as a whole is constrained axially and angularly on the drive body.

  • Patent number: 5569022
Abstract: A pump driven by an electric motor includes a stator, a rotor cooperating with the stator, a rotating drive-shaft associated to the rotor, a hermetically sealed chamber, and a disk wheel within the sealed chamber and joined to the drive-shaft. The sealed chamber is sealed by a first ring gasket around the drive-shaft and in the sealed chamber and a second ring gasket fixed to the drive-shaft and against the first ring gasket. The first and second ring gaskets are pressure coupled to each other. At start-up of the motor, the rotor or the stator is allowed to turn freely for a certain initial arc without torque being applied to the coupling so that inertia can be accumulated to overcome resistance of the coupling when the torque is subsequently applied to the coupling.

  • Patent number: 5564627
Abstract: The invention relates to a heating cycle system of a motor vehicle which includes the vehicle internal combustion engine, a heating device which is independent of the engine, an interior heat exchanger, a circulating pump, and a bypass line which connects a return line to a flow line. According to the invention the circulating pump is driven by a reversible electric motor and is used as a control element for selective operation of a small cycle including only the heating device and the vehicle heat exchanger or a large cycle which also includes the internal combustion engine. The direction of operation of the circulating pump controls a valve which directs fluid to either the small or the large cycle.
