Cable Tube Or Rod Splicing Patents (Class 425/802)
  • Patent number: 4759811
Abstract: A unique air vent is provided for use with heat-recoverable closures when installed on pressurized cables. Typically, when a heat-recoverable closure is used to repair a hole or opening in the jacket of a pressurized cable the cable must be depressurized during installation of the closure to ensure formation of a pressure and watertight seal. The air vent assembly permits installation of a heat-recoverable closure without the need for depressurizing the cable. After installation, the air vent can be used as an access point to the pressurized air within the cable.

  • Patent number: 4204896
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for producing an insulated joint between electrical conductors, particularly between cables insulated by cross-linked polyethylene material. Heat is applied to joined parts of the conductors which have been covered by a cross-linked polyethylene material in uncured condition and closely confined within an enclosure which is heated until the said material is cured, pressure being applied to the joint while the joint is cooling, whereby voids in the cured joint are substantially suppressed. More specifically, parts of cable cores are connected together, the joint and adjacent portions of the cables are covered with the uncured material, the covered joint is heated within a mould until the material is cured, and pressure is applied to the joint while it is cooling. Advantageously, the uncured material is in the form of a tape. The mould cavity for the joint may be defined by two mould parts and the pressure applied by moving one of them in relation to the other.

  • Patent number: 4004867
Abstract: Apparatus for molding insulation about a relatively short section of an uninsulated conductor of a high voltage cable. The apparatus has a pair of mold forms that define a cavity in which the new insulation is molded. Heat and pressure applying platens on each side of the mold forms are fitted with perpendicularly extending stress bars and removable means mounted to the platen for biasing the latter and, therewith, the mold forms towards each other. The mold forms and at least one platen include a series of cavity vent holes which are tapered and have a major diameter proximate the cavity. A transfer pot is provided for injecting a softened insulating material into the cavity via a passage. One or move transverse bars extend across the center of the passage and prevent entrapped gas or air disposed in the center of the transfer pot from being transferred into cavity.
