Abstract: Correctly formulated enterically coated nutrient pellets are able to significantly to lower the blood sugar level of type two diabetics when administered with a normal meal. The inventive composition is effective at dosage levels of 10 g or less. Effective doses of the composition contribute 42 kcal or fewer to the patient's diet. A preferred form of the composition contains lauric acid coated for release in the distal bowel. When taken with an ordinary meal, the effective dosage does not induce the ileal brake and is more than 50 times (often more than 100 times) as effective on per kilocalorie basis as an ordinary meal at eliciting increases in PYY and GLP-1. Thus, ordinary nutrients—as opposed to drugs—can be used to reduce blood sugar levels when administered at dosage levels that are not significant promoters of weight gain.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of compounds which are capable of producing a cooling sensation when they are brought into contact with the human body. In particular, the present invention relates to the use of compounds modulating TRPM8, and optionally to the use of compounds selectively exhibiting agonist activity at the TRPM8 channel. Such compounds have applications in many fields, particularly in oral and personal hygiene products and foodstuffs, but also in pharmaceutical composition products, cosmetics, textile products and packaging products. The present invention further relates to products containing such compounds and to the medical use of such compounds.

  • Patent number: 8993031
Abstract: A method of making a gel-type livestock feed includes initially forming a feed mixture by mixing feed nutrient components, water, alginate, and a calcium component insoluble in water or a sequestrate to inhibit the calcium component from reacting with the alginate. Once the feed mixture is formed, the calcium component is solubilized or the sequestrates affecting the reactivity between the alginate and the calcium component is removed such that a gel feed is formed that includes a gel matrix containing the feed nutrient components. The gel feed may then be fed to the livestock. In another aspect of the present invention, piglets are weaned by feeding the gel feed for at least seven days directly after weaning. The gel feed may also include protein derived from blood with or without egg protein.

Abstract: In a general embodiment, a method for increasing efficacy of a swallow response is provided. The method includes providing a thickened composition having a xanthan gum thickening component, and orally administering the composition to an individual having, or at risk of having, a swallowing impairment. In an embodiment, the efficacy of the swallow response is increased by reducing an amount of pharyngeal residue in the individual's piriform sinuses, valleculae, and/or pharyngeal wall during or after the individual swallows the composition.
