    Abstract: Permanent gray-scale reproductions including half-tone images. A refractory background region bears refractory thin-film dichroic filter means patterned to conform to the reproduced half-tone image. Preferred background region materials include metals, semiconductors, and ceramics; the thin-film materials are preferably oxides or nitrides of metals and semiconductors. If the refractory materials are appropriately selected, the reproductions are highly resistant to chemical and thermal deterioration and should have useful lives in the hundreds of thousands of years.

    Abstract: A process for obtaining highly stable color photographic images utilizes a silver halide photographic element comprising an essentially colorless, immobile compound which is capable of complexing with ferrous ions to form a dye. The complexing compound contains a complexing moiety which is represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein m is zero or a positive integer 1 to 3, n and p are independently 0 or 1 and represents a single or double bond. Z is R.sup.1 --N.dbd., O.dbd., S.dbd., R.sup.1 --P.dbd., (R.sup.1).sub.2 P-- or (R.sup.1).sub.3 P.dbd., and when Z is (R.sup.1).sub.2 P--, n is 1, otherwise n is 0. R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are independently hydrogen, amino, hydroxy, mercapto, alkoxy, alkyl, aryl or a heterocyclic moiety. When R.sup.6 is so defined, p is 1 and is a single bond. If m is 0, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, and R.sup.3 and R.sup.

    Abstract: Essentially colorless, hydrophilic ligand-releasing polymers are prepared from ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers represented by the structure: ##STR1## wherein R' is hydrogen or lower alkyl, COUP is a photographic color coupling moiety, LINK is a coupling-off group which can be cleaved by an oxidized developer composition, and LIG is a ligand capable of complexing with metal ions, while joined to the polymer, to form a dye. These polymers also have recurring units which impart hydrophilicity to the polymer. These polymers form metal complex dyes in unexposed areas of photographic elements only, while the ligand is cleaved from the polymer in the exposed areas and washed out of the element.

In this structure, X is a group which, as a function of silver halide development, is cleaved from LIG, and LIG is a ligand capable of complexing with metal ions while joined to X to form a color masking dye. A color masking dye is formed by developing the imagewise exposed areas of the described element with a developing agent to cleave LIG from X and washing substantially all of the cleaved LIG moieties in those areas out of the element, and treating the element with metal ions to form a masking dye complex with LIG-X in unexposed areas.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a photographic print and process of making the same wherein the print presents highlights by a build-up of high reflective, e.g. specularly reflective, metal in the highlighted areas which would otherwise print as blank or very light-toned areas of exposed paper or film. The gradient areas are preferably defined by spaced, specularly reflective areas optionally interspersed with conventional deposit of particulate silver. The method of fabricating such article includes an initially conventional development step, followed by a second development step wherein the silver halide areas remaining after the first development step are converted into increments of specularly reflective silver. An etching step may be interposed between the conventional development step and the development step leading to the creation of specular areas.

    Abstract: A process for reducing patient and personnel hazards from exposure to X-radiation during diagnostic procedures, comprising irradiating a photographic emulsion to produce an underexposed radiograph, developing and fixing the radiograph and treating the underexposed processed radiograph in a one-step copper ion image enhancement composition to intensify the image profile to a level at least equivalent to a fully exposed radiograph and subsequently darkening the enhanced image by treatment in a one-step iron ion darkening composition to blacken the image profile. The copper ion image enhancement composition and subsequent iron ion darkening composition produces a darkened or blackened image profile as is found in conventional radiographs and enables a reduction in radiation exposure to patient and personnel up to 50% and more over what is generally regarded as the usual level of radiation for a given diagnostic radiographic examination.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for producing color transparencies on a recording element comprising an additive color filter screen having disposed thereon a coating of a visible light-transmissive, invisible light-sensitive, silverless material, preferably a diazo or vesicular material. The method comprises the steps of imagewise exposing a panchromatic auxiliary layer, e.g. a photoconductive layer, to a multicolored object, such exposure being made through the recording element of the invention. This step acts to produce in the auxiliary layer a monochrome image containing color image information of the multicolored object. Next, the silverless material is exposed to invisible actinic radiation, such exposure being made through the monochrome image formed in or on the panchromatic auxiliary layer. This step serves to transfer the color image information from the auxiliary layer to the silverless layer of the recording element.

    Abstract: This disclosure depicts a new low cost color photographic film assembly which is of the additive type but is of very high speed due to its extremely efficient utilization of available exposure light. The assembly includes a photosensitive layer actinic to light in the entire visible bandwidth of the exposure light for recording intensity variations in light incident thereon. It includes a spectral separation phase structure comprising a pattern of periodically repetitive, wavelength-sensitive phase elements effective to deflect incident light of predetermined different colors in different directions. The phase structure is supported adjacent to the photosensitive layer and spaced therefrom by a prescribed distance which is such that each element of an image formed on the assembly is analyzed into a number of color separation elements segregated on the photosensitive layer. The image is recorded in the layer as a dissected composite of interleaved color separation elements.
