The push rod is spring-biased upwards, and is pushed against the support piece of the cap, thereby permitting the cap to click shut and open. This arrangement permits necessary parts including a spring to be assembled in a cap pivot-and-latch simply by thrusting them in the rear space of the housing. This reduces the difficulty which otherwise, workers would encounter in assembling parts including a resilient element in a relatively small space. Also, the work of pivoting the cap to the housing can be advantageously separated from the work of assembling pivot-and-latch parts.

The improvement is provided by a windshield of similar cross-section to that of the receptacle and slidably retained between upper and lower stop members on the receptacle, the windshield comprising two solid side walls, a solid back wall, an open top and an open front wall the solid side walls having a thumb-access cut-away portion, the open front wall having a cigarette-access opening above the cut-away portion of the side walls, the windshield being between about 50% and about 100% and preferably about 100% of the height of the receptacle. This provides a screen to enable the lighter to be lit even in strong winds.

  • Patent number: 4634374
Abstract: A jacket for receiving a cigarette lighter has a sliding windscreen which can be slid up from the jacket when the lighter is lit, to shield the lighter flame from the wind. The top of the windscreen has a chimney hole for venting the lighter flame. A cap made of a heat-resistant material is mounted on the top of the windscreen and snap-fit into the chimney hole, to provide an insulating effect so that the finger is not burned when pushing the windscreen down into the jacket after the lighter has been used, and to provide improved finger purchase and feel when pushing down the windscreen. Alternatively, the windscreen is topless and has an outwardly directed peripheral flange for finger purchase with low heat transfer to the finger.

  • Patent number: 4544348
Abstract: Apparatus for burning spirit or similar fuel with a fuel container (10) filled with a fuel absorbing mass with partly exposed surface, from which fuel to be burned evaporates. A burner tube (16) is so arranged with respect to the exposed surface that suction of combustion air into the tube is secured. The fuel container is separate and removable from the apparatus and has top, bottom and side walls enclosing the absorbing mass. The top wall for forming the exposed surface includes a central opening, the area of which comprises a fraction of the total area of the upper top wall. The opening is surrounded by a rim portion (26) of the top wall substantially raised with respect to the rest of the top side of the container. The tube (16) is surrounded by an outer fixed tube (20) with an upper end extending above the level to which the burner tube is normally intended to extend.

  • Patent number: 4496307
Abstract: A candle for varying the flame intensity and extinguishing the flame when the candle becomes unstable. The candle includes a receptacle containing combustible fuel and terminating into an open end covered by a cap means having a central opening. An externally threaded hollow tubular member is secured to the cap. A wick extends through the cap opening and the tubular member, so that an upper tip of the wick protrudes out from the cylindrical member to provide the location for the candle flame, and a lower portion of the wick is immersed in the fuel. A flame adjuster for varying the intensity of the flame includes a collar and a ledge between the upper part and lower part of the collar. The collar is internally threaded to engage and move along the tubular member, to decrease the flame when moving upward and to increase the flame when moving downward. A flame extinguisher means comprising a hollow body terminating at the upper end into a shoulder with a hollow central neck extending upward therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4493634
Abstract: A kerosene heating stove is equipped with a temperature sensor and a carbonic oxide sensor. The temperature of a space is maintained at a constant level by automatically increasing and decreasing the burning length of a wick in the kerosene heating stove to change the height of the heating flame. The carbonic oxide sensor automatically generates an alarm and decreases the length of the wick to extinguish the flame if the concentration of carbonic oxide in the space increases to a predetermined dangerous level. In another embodiment, a kerosene heating stove is provided with a humidifier which automatically permits water to flow into an evaporating container in proximity to the flame when the moisture content of the air in the space falls below a predetermined level in order to regulate the moisture content of the air.

  • Patent number: 4477247
Abstract: A liquid fuel burning torch includes a container having a substantially barrel-shaped main portion which defines a chamber accommodating a liquid fuel during use. The top wall of the container has an upwardly upset threaded neck portion on which there is mounted a closing cap having a circumferential wall provided with external and internal threads, the internal threads meshing with the external threads of the neck portion. The closing member also has a transverse wall which has a central aperture for the passage of a wick therethrough. A snuffer cap having a circumferential wall provided with threads meshing with the external threads of the closing member can be fittingly mounted on the closing member so as to extinguish the flame by denying access of oxygen to the wick portion extending outwardly of the closing member. The closing member has an external flange which frictionally engages the top wall of the container around the neck portion upon tightening.

  • Patent number: 4126408
Abstract: A liquid-fueled lamp comprising a liquid-impervious container, which is preferably a light-weight steel can of the type used to store foods, etc. A relatively small opening is provided in the top of the can, and a tube or some other structural member extends through the opening. The tube is preferably rigidly secured to the container, as by welding or brazing. A metal tube having a 1/4 inch diameter is suitable. A flame-positioning means, such as a "plug" of asbestos fibers, is mounted in the top of the tube. A wick for transferring fuel from within the container to the flame-positioning means is also provided. Preferably, the wick is made of a narrow piece of double-knit polyester material. The wick and the plug of asbestos fibers are mechanically held together by the tube, so that fuel drawn upward by the wick will saturate the asbestos plug. Typically, the wick will furnish more fuel to the asbestos plug than will be consumed by a flame.
