  • Patent number: 11503822
Abstract: A plug is attachable to a wall of a torch that is configured to burn a liquid fuel. The plug adds one or more features to the torch, such as a fuel level sensor, a temperature sensor, a tilt sensor, an automatic wick ignitor and/or extinguisher, a wick clamp, a wick advancing mechanism, and/or a global positioning system. The plug includes an electronic controller, and wired and/or wireless electronics configured to provide remote control and/or monitoring of the added features. Power for the plug can be provided by a battery and/or a solar panel. The controller can establish a unique torch identity, thereby enabling a remote computing device to monitor and/or control features of a plurality of torches that each have a plug of the present disclosure attached thereto. The plug can be removably or permanently attached to the torch.

Abstract: A liquid fuel cell that includes a canister having a fuel reservoir and a burner assembly mounted upon the canister. The burner assembly contains a wick holding aperture that opens into the fuel reservoir and a wick that is made up of continuous fiber strands mounted in the tube. The wick is doubled over to create a crown that is vertically disposed above the top of the wick holding aperture and the two ends of the wick are arranged to pass down through the wick burner into the fuel reservoir. A number of fiber strands are severed in the crown region to create a small island of bristles which greatly enhances the wick's ability to be rapidly and efficiently ignited.

Abstract: An oil burning lamp has a fuel reservoir, a fuel expansion chamber releasably and sealingly coupled to the fuel reservoir, a burner assembly coupled to the fuel expansion chamber, and an adjustable wick. If the fuel in the fuel reservoir undergoes thermal expansion, it flows into the fuel expansion chamber, thereby preventing fuel leaks and spills. In the preferred embodiment, the burner assembly is permanently coupled to the fuel expansion chamber, thereby preventing users from refueling the lamp while the lamp is burning. The fuel expansion chamber also serves as an overflow fuel chamber, so that if the lamp is inadvertently knocked over, the fuel will flow into the fuel expansion chamber, not out of the lamp.

  • Patent number: 6135759
Abstract: Variable-heat chafing-dish burners and methods of use. One variable-heat chafing-dish burner embodiment has a reservoir with liquid fuel, into which a short wick and a long wick extend. Both wicks are lit initially, in order to provide initial high heat to bring chafing-dish water quickly to temperature. As fuel is consumed by the flames fed by both wicks, the fuel level within the reservoir drops. The short wick initial immersed length is set such that at the approximate time the chafing-dish water has been brought to temperature, the short wick is no longer immersed in fuel, and the flame it fed is extinguished due to fuel starvation. After the flame fed by the short wick is extinguished, only the flame fed by the long wick remains lit, thereby providing the lowered heat required to maintain the chafing-dish water at temperature. In this manner, a high initial heat is provided to bring chafing-dish water quickly to temperature, and lower heat is provided thereafter to save fuel.

  • Patent number: 6010334
Abstract: In a combustion appliance provided with a combustion wick for sucking up a liquid fuel by the utilization of capillarity and burning it, functions for automatically extinguishing the fire after the combustion has been carried out for a predetermined length of time are constituted with a simple mechanism. The combustion wick (6), which comprises a sucking section for sucking up a liquid fuel by the utilization of capillarity and a burning section for burning the sucked-up liquid fuel, is divided at an intermediate position into a burning section side subdivision (6A) and a sucking section side subdivision (6B). The combustion wick (6) is located such that at least either one of the subdivisions can be moved in a direction that comes into contact with the other and in a direction that separates from the other. The fuel is fed from the sucking section side subdivision (6B) to the burning section side subdivision (6A) when they are brought into contact with each other.

  • Patent number: 5584685
Abstract: A discharge-type capable of accomplishing ignition of a wick at a position convenient or suitable for the ignition. Spark discharge for ignition of a wick is started in the course of raising of the wick. Thus, any possible variation in height of the wick and deformation of the wick due to wear do not adversely affects ignition of the wick, because the ignition is carried out when a gap between the wick being raised and the discharge electrode is rendered optimum for the ignition. This permits a dry cell to be satisfactorily used as a power supply for the ignition.

Abstract: A warm air blowing heater includes combustion equipment for burning fuel, and an air duct provided at a position away from a portion directly above the combustion equipment for blowing air from the heater into the room. The combustion equipment includes a burner chimney provided above a burner, and a reflecting plate is provided behind this burner chimney. The radiation heat of the combustion equipment is radiated directly and is also reflected on the reflecting plate to heat the room. The air duct does not disturb the rise of the combustion exhaust gas of the combustion equipment to form a smooth rising exhaust gas stream. When the air is blown from the air duct toward the front of the heater, the high temperature air in the upper portion of the heater is sucked. This high temperature air is mixed with the air blown from the air duct to allow the heater to blow warm air into the room. The blower motor may suck the air in the room and supply it to the air duct.

  • Patent number: 4486170
Abstract: In a liquid fuel combustion apparatus, the upper end of a wick is ready to be ignited when it projects upward from a pan portion, and is extinguished when it is withdrawn downward from the pan portion. The wick moves up and down as a first operating lever swings around an operating shaft. If the first operating lever is lowered, a retaining lever is raised by a bent strip. When the wick is in a position for high-temperature combustion, a retaining portion of the retaining lever engages a receiving portion of an interlocking plate. When the first operating lever is lowered, its engaging pin engages an engaging slit of an adjusting lever. If a knob of a thermal power control plate is moved up and down along a slot, the adjusting lever swings around a support pin, and the first operating lever swings slightly through the engaging pin and the engaging slit. Thus, the wick is moved up and down in a combustion region for adjustment of thermal power.

  • Patent number: 4260366
Abstract: There is disclosed a selectively actuated candle lighting or igniting apparatus particularly for use with candles whose wicks are within an enclosure. Such wicks are used to float on oil within glass bowls and the like. These candles may also be within hurricane-type enclosures or chimneys. Wicks, as a part of candles, are found in many table settings for both indoor and outdoor use. Many candle lighting devices have been proposed but generally wick lighters have been less than satisfactory since the wick members of these lighters generally accummulate wax and the wax softens and has a tendency to adhere to a tubular member within which it is drawn for extinguishing. The heat sink construction of the instant igniter prevents this problem.
