Abstract: A flame colorant composition, device and method incorporate inorganic metal salt particles as flame colorants, and a drying agent. The metal salts are preferably selected from among copper chloride, lithium chloride, copper sulphate, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, strontium chloride, sodium chloride and magnesium chloride, each producing a flame of a characteristic color. The drying agent is Micro-Cell E silica, prevents particle aggregation. Preferably, the components are similarly sized particles which do not exceed 0.16 centimeters (0.0625 inches) in diameter. There is also provided a dual layer envelope containing the flame colorant mixture, the inner layer a vapour barrier and the outer layer easily combustible. The device of the present invention will produce a colored flame lasting up to thirty minutes without additional components.

  • Patent number: 6752622
Abstract: The present invention provides various embodiments for a colored flame lamp and a colored flame candle. The lamps and candles may burn with a flame of a characteristic color such as green, red, blue, purple, orange, or silver-white. The lamp fuel composition may include a liquid solvent and dissolved metal salts. The candles may be composed of a solvent, a hardener, and metal salts dissolved in the solvent. The colored flame in the lamp and candle results from vaporized metal salts that travel up a wick with lamp fuel or melted candle material.

  • Patent number: 5888926
Abstract: This invention is directed to a process for forming a sorbent-metal complex. The process includes oxidizing a sorbent precursor and contacting the sorbent precursor with a metallic species. The process further includes chemically reacting the sorbent precursor and the metallic species, thereby forming a sorbent-metal complex. In one particular aspect of the invention, at least a portion of the sorbent precursor is transformed into sorbent particles during the oxidation step. These sorbent particles then are contacted with the metallic species and chemically reacted with the metallic species, thereby forming a sorbent-metal complex. Another aspect of the invention is directed to a process for forming a sorbent-metal complex in a combustion system. The process includes introducing a sorbent precursor into a combustion system and subjecting the sorbent precursor to an elevated temperature sufficient to oxidize the sorbent precursor and transform the sorbent precursor into sorbent particles.

  • Patent number: 5858031
Abstract: A method for enhancing the visibility of a flame produced during free-burning of an aqueous alcohol-based fuel composition in air. The fuel composition is substantially free of skin-irritants, corrosive salts and agents which, when burned in air, produce air pollution evidenced by the production of volatile organic compounds. The fuel includes between approximately 10% and 30% by volume of water, and between approximately 70% and 90% by volume of a mixture of alcohols including ethanol and isopropanol, the ethanol constituting between approximately 24% and 83% by volume of the fuel composition. The method includes providing an amount of isopropanol ranging between approximately 7% and 60% by volume of the fuel composition, in which the volume ratio of isopropanol to ethanol in the fuel does not exceed 2:1.

  • Patent number: 4822380
Abstract: A clean and attractive carbonaceous fuel product is provided for improved convenience and marketability. Coal or charcoal can be coated with a clean and durable coating for cleanliness in handling; and, the coating can be colored as desired. Further, a metal salt can be added to the coating or the product itself to color the flame while the product burns. Paraffin can be used as the coating, and the paraffin is maintained above its melting point to improve gloss. Other additives can also improve gloss. Coal is preferably coated with latex to provide an attractive coating that will prevent breaking of the coal. A flammable liquid can be incorporated into charcoal briquettes for easier lighting; and, the liquid reduces the amount of paraffin used in the coating. A masking agent hides the odor of the flammable liquid, the masking agent being in the coating rather than in the flammable liquid itself.
