Abstract: A hand held tool using continuous sanding belts for sanding and smoothing flat surfaces with the additional capability to produce more uniformly rounded edges and corners of various work pieces. Its two piece construction comprises a flat base plate rotationally attached to the bottom side of a housing. The housing has along the length of its top side a deep channel into which a portion of a mounted sanding belt may be wedged, creating a concave sanding surface, that can then be used to produce more uniformly rounded edges and corners. The tool incorporates a way for placing and tensioning continuous sanding belts on it by simply swiveling the base plate that is attached to the bottom of the housing, which by such rotational positioning compresses the compressible material of the housing, or releases it, thus applying or releasing tension on a mounted belt.

  • Patent number: 6406365
Abstract: The present invention relates to a sanding tool, and more particularly to a sanding tool for smoothing a repair surface. A sanding tool according to the invention is for sanding a surface of a target plane to be repaired into a predetermined condition, which is composed of a base plate, on the front face side of which sandpaper can be stretched, and movable base plates being disposed bendably on opposite sides of the base plate and on each front face side of the movable base plate, sandpaper can be stretched. The movable base plates are resiliently energized in a direction wherein the surface of the base plate becomes flush with the surfaces of the movable base plates, respectively. According to a sanding tool of the present invention, a surface to be repaired can be sanded by an easy operation to obtain a good finish, even if an operator is not skilled.

  • Patent number: 6371837
Abstract: A backup pad for engaging and supporting abrasive sheets, the backup pad being mounted securely to a drive shaft to prevent relative rotation thereto, and to allow easy mounting and dismounting of the backup pad to the mounting shaft without the use of tools. The backup pad includes a body comprising a front surface and a back surface, releasable engagement means provided on the front surface for releasably engaging an abrasive article, and a mounting boss provided on said rear surface. The mounting boss includes a first end facing away from the body, and an opening in the first end of the boss, the opening being formed by an inner surface generally perpendicular to said body and defining a non-circular cross-section. The opening includes elastic means such as an o-ring for releasably engaging a drive shaft mounted in said opening. Also disclosed is a method of using such a backup pad.

  • Patent number: 5707275
Abstract: In a clamping device for clamping a disk-shaped tool to a threaded spindle of a hand-held machine tool, a nut part, which can be screwed onto the threaded spindle, presses a face plate against the tool. An axial rolling bearing is arranged between the nut part and the face plate. To achieve simple and reliable manual clamping and release, in conjunction with a slip clutch function under overload, a spring is arranged between the face plate and the nut part next to the axial rolling bearing. The spring forms a non-rotatable frictionally engaged connection between the nut part and the face plate. The axial rolling bearing supports the face plate on the nut part. The nut part slips in relation to the face plate when an upper limit value of the torque transmitted is exceeded, and the axial rolling bearing rotates.

Abstract: An abrasive tool includes in combination a tubular sleeve of exteriorly coated abrasive which has an axial length and an inside diameter. A drive arbor for the sleeve includes a mandrel adapted to be rotated by a power tool and the like. An elastomeric generally cylindrical arbor is mounted on one end of the mandrel and has an outer and inner axial end. The arbor includes a radially projecting stop flange at its inner end and has a tapered configuration between the stop flange and its outer end to receive the abrasive tubular section, but which creates an interference fit as the tubular section is telescoped on the arbor until one axial end of the tubular section engages the stop flange. The arbor body is provided with non-radial slots which make the body more pliable in a static condition, but which improve the grip of the arbor on the sleeve at speed. The slots also improve heat dissipation.
