  • Patent number: 9216487
Abstract: Apparatus and method for sharpening a cutting tool having a cutting edge. In some embodiments, a manual sharpener includes a base housing adapted to be contactingly supported on a base surface, with the base housing having an overall length dimension in a first direction. A support member extends along the overall length dimension of the base housing and is adapted for rotation with respect to the base housing about a central axis extending along the first direction. An abrasive surface covers a top surface of the support member. The support member rotates the abrasive surface responsive to presentation of the cutting edge of the tool thereagainst as the cutting edge is moved along the abrasive surface in the first direction. A biasing mechanism coupled to the support member urges the support member to a neutral rotational position with respect to the base housing.

  • Publication number: 20150099430
Abstract: A knife blade sharpener including two generally circular sharpening members pivotally mounted about a pivot axis and having opposed grinding edges. The grinding edges are located along one side of a notch formed in each of the generally circular sharpening members and can be brought to face one another, adjustably subtending an obtuse angle therebetween. The pivot axis may be established by a screw and a knurled nut enabling the user to tighten the two generally circular sharpening members together at a selected subtended angle for sharpening. A knife blade may be drawn through a wedge shaped gap between the two mutually facing grinding edges, and thereby sharpened. The knife blade sharpener has resilient gripping pads and a holster which facilitates gripping as well as for stowage.

The device accommodates any off-the-shelf sharpener rod whereas other sharpeners require the use of a unique or special rod built into the sharpener assembly. Most users already have sharpening rods, so all they have to do is put their existing sharpening rods into the sharpener holder to sharpen their knives or other cutting implements. The sharpener rod in the rod holder is securely clamped in position. The adjustable base is rotated to the required sharpening angle and securely clamped in position. The user moves the blade vertically against the sharpening rod at a perpendicular angle with respect to the base assembly to sharpen the blade.

Abstract: A knife sharpening bar includes a handle that carries a support bar. A flexible tube is tightly fit over the support bar. A hollow ceramic bar is then fit over the flexible tube with an inside surface of the ceramic bar tightly engaging the flexible tube so that the flexible tube provides a cushioning support between the support bar and the ceramic bar, which protects the ceramic bar from directly bearing any external impact applied to the knife sharpening bar. An internally-threaded cap engages an externally-threaded free end of the support bar and abuts against the ceramic bar to thereby secure the ceramic bar in position on the support bar. Collars or other buffering members can be positioned at opposite ends of the ceramic bar.

Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to provide a cutting machine capable of sharpening in such a manner that an angle of a cutting edge can be kept constant. A support block 14 is provided with two arms 14a, 14b which are spaced at a certain angle, and the arms 14a, 14b have rotation shafts 12a, 13a of rotary whetstones 12, 13, respectively, extending upright from the vicinities of the front ends thereof. The rotary whetstones 12, 13 has, at front ends thereof, flat surfaces perpendicular to the rotation shafts 12a, 13a to sharpen the one side 11b and the other side 11c of the cutting edge 11a of the cutting blade 11, respectively. The whetstone holding mechanism 15 can be moved in parallel linearly or can swing almost linearly, as mainly indicated by the arrow 15a, to bring the flat surface 12b of the rotary whetstone 12 into contact with the one side 11b of the cutting blade 11, as depicted by a broken line, thereby allowing the switch to the sharpening state.

Abstract: A system and method for cleaning receiver slots with hook-fits for stator blade ring segments. A first cleaning tool with an abrasive coating and sideward projection in the shape of the hook is slid through the slot using the hook-fit as a guide. A second cleaning tool with an abrasive coating and a formed/machined hook-fit used as a guide while cleaning the receiver slots as it is pushed through the receiver slots. The tools remove trash, oil rust/oxidation, and other foreign materials from receiving slot. Both tools may attach to a metal rod with two knuckles as part of the handle that connects to and uses the hook-fit as a guide enabling the operator to reach deep into the radius of the compressor case receiver slots and hook-fits located adjacent to and beneath the rotor and rotor blades so that the hook-fit and receiver slot can be thoroughly cleaned.

Abstract: A sharpening apparatus having a slightly convexly or concavely curved abrasive surface, for use in sharpening woodworking tools or in other fields requiring such processing of precision parts or tools. The invention may further employ either cylindrical or conic abrasive surfaces. Cylindrical abrasive surfaces are desirable when a curvature of a fixed radius is desired, or where accuracy of the curvature radius is required. Conic or semi-conic surfaces may be used to enable a user, by means of short sharpening strokes, to achieve an approximate desired curvature among a range of possible curvatures provided along the length of the abrasive surface as the curvature radius progressively declines. In this way, one abrasive surface may be used to achieve a variety of curvatures.

Abstract: A sharpening device for sharpening operative instrumentation having a gripping handle 4 and an acutely angled receptacle support 6, both of which form a radiated palmer contour 8, and both of which have flattened self balancing table rest 10 terminations. The hone receptacle 6 has an attached offset rectilinear container or whet-stone receptacle 12 with guard walls 16 that extend above a contained whet-stone 14. The instrument entry channel 18 is a shorter wall that allows full usage of the whet-stone surface without forcibly influencing sharpening angulations due to an excessively high wall. The offset receptacle support 6 and whet-stone receptacle 12 create two overhangs or a vertical locking rest 20 and a horizontal locking 22 rest that engage with a table. The locking rests coupled with the angled handle 4 receptacle support 6 and resultant palmer contour 8 permit two ergonomic holding positions that allow for both vertical and horizontal honing orientations.
