Publication number: 20020053165Abstract: A safety-locking device is disclosed which is usable with a manual override system in a secure prison cell. The safety locking device is cooperable with the existing crank mechanism and geared together such that upon turning of the crank mechanism, the locking device rotates to a locked position corresponding to the position where the individual cells can be keyed open. The safety locking device is comprised of a small drive gear which is driven by said crank mechanism, and a large driven gear or sprocket driven by the small gear, by way of a chain. A locking mechanism has a locking plunger spring loaded against the back of the larger gear such that upon reaching the position where the individual cells can be keyed open, a locking plunger locks the larger driven gear and crank mechanism from further rotation. A release mechanism allows for further rotation.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2001Publication date: May 9, 2002Inventors: James M. Secoolish, Lester Barnes

Patent number: 6182402Abstract: An apparatus for the viewing of an inmate in a cell while preventing the inmate from determining if he is being observed includes a frame enclosure with means for securing the apparatus about a cell window attached to the frame structure. A two-way mirror is attached to the frame enclosure and disposed proximate the cell window. A sheet of light attenuating material is disposed in the frame enclosure in planar alignment with respect to the two-way mirror a predetermined distance therefrom to darken the area intermediate the two-way mirror and the sheet of light attenuation material. Means for viewing through the two-way mirror are provided which include a lens or a video camera and display. An optional slot allows for manual positioning of the lens to permit optimum viewing into the cell. The means for securing includes a plurality of magnets disposed around the perimeter of the frame enclosure or by use of a hook and loop fastener.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1998Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Inventor: Duco Van Aalst

Patent number: 5864986Abstract: A check mechanism is provided to regulate door speed of a roller supported sliding door as the door is manually opened or closed. The mechanism is attached to a door hanger and uses a rocker arm, which slides along a control track. The control track has elevated or offset control regions which cause the rocker arm to apply force to a brake arm through an adjustable spring. The brake arm pivots to apply braking force through a brake pad to a door roller. The control track may contain regions of no control or of lesser control to allow the door to slide freely between opening or closing regions of control.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1997Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: Schlage Lock CompanyInventor: Raymond H. Patent number: 5857290Abstract: A check mechanism is provided to regulate door speed of a roller supported sliding door as the door is manually opened or closed. The check mechanism includes an idler arm assembly attached to a door hanger with an idler roller attached to the idler arm assembly. The check mechanism further includes a pivotable spring biased lever arm having two inclined ramp sections. As the door slides, the idler roller contacts the lever arm. The inclination of the ramp causes an increasing retardation force to be applied to the idler roller, thereby retarding the speed of the door. After the idler roller passes a point of maximum retarding force, the door becomes free wheeling until a second idler roller contacts the lever arm of a second checking mechanism which in turn slows the speed of the door.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1997Date of Patent: January 12, 1999Assignee: Schlage Lock CompanyInventor: Raymond H. Patent number: 4912878Abstract: A mounting assembly is provided for a jail cell door. The door is suspended from a trolley and is slidable, on a fixed rail, between fully open and closed positions. Means are provided for releasably locking the door in either of those positions. Stop means at opposite ends of the rail respectively limit movement of the trolley to the closed and fully open positions. Each stop means includes a compression spring which absorbs shock forces when the door is displaced to its extreme positions. The spring means also provide a force for displacing the door from its closed or fully open positions upon release of the means locking the door in either of these positions.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1988Date of Patent: April 3, 1990Assignee: Stewart Decatur Security Systems, Inc.Inventor: Leroy Bentley
