  • Patent number: 6544156
Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining a desired nip pressure distribution profile in the cross direction of a paper web. The paper web passes through a nip, the latter defined by at least one elastomer covered roll, the covered roll having polarizable particles or magnetic particles embedded therein. A plurality of spaced plates or spaced coils each generate a local field (respectively electric or magnetic) which acts upon individual spaced zones or regions along the covered roll. The field may thus be an electric field or a magnetic filed. The effect of the field is to change the effective modulus of the elastomer by acting on the particles. In turn, this action varies the nip pressure pulse as to exert a desired pressure at each of a plurality of spaced zones or regions on the paper web, to thus create or process a more uniform product in the nip. The method and apparatus can be used, for example, to improve web moisture profiles in the press section of paper machines.

Abstract: When rolling steel sheet and other rolled stock, rattling occurs in certain operating states. This results in reduced quality of the rolled stock and rejects as well as damage to the rolling mill. No improvement was achieved by placing brakes on the cylinders. Electronic monitoring is not a satisfying solution. Given that rattling is a self-starting oscillation, resistance sensors are coupled to the cylinders and/or the rolled stock in order to stabilize the self-starting oscillation modes, modes with negative damping, by means of additional damping. In the example illustrated in FIG. 4, cylinder-shaped, rotating dampers are coupled to the working cylinders. Concentric or disc-shaped layers made of steel and plastic such as those found in layered oscillation absorbers are most effective and adaptable. The arrangement of the working cylinder and the damper illustrated in FIG.

Abstract: A elastomer-covered roller (10) is provided with an improved bond coating for bonding the elastomeric cover (14) to the core (11). At least one layer of material (15) is thermally sprayed on the core to form a rough surface having a roughness from 400 microinches Ra to 2000 microinches Ra or greater. In a further improvement a denser, less porous layer (17) may be applied next to the core to protect the core from corrosion, followed by a less dense layer (19) applied to the first layer and having a similarly rough surface (20) for good mechanical bonding.

Abstract: The present invention provides a composite roll for cold rolling capable of rolling a cold-rolled steel strip having little edge drop, a cold-rolled stainless steel strip or a bright finish steel strip having excellent surface brightness or a silicon steel strip excellent in magnetic properties without causing breakage of roll, which is a roll in which a sleeve is fitted at a surrounding of a shaft portion with the shaft portion as a central axis and its fabrication method, in which the sleeve is constituted by previously integrating a plurality of pieces of mold members divided by a face intersecting with the central axis of the roll. Further, this is a fit roll in which a sleeve member of an outermost layer is made of WC—Co series hard alloys having Young's modulus of 35000 kgf/mm or more and Co content of 12-50 weight % and is provided with a wall thickness of 3% or more of roll radius and a ratio L/D of a length L of a barrel of the sleeve to a diameter D of the roll falls in a range of 2-10.

Abstract: A charging member for amorphous silicon photoreceptors which can be supplied with a uniform and stable resistivity, exhibits an excellent durability and is insusceptible to variation of resistivity against environmental conditions, pinhole leak and contamination on the photoreceptors, showing a good quality and a long life. An electrophotographic charging member for charging a photoreceptor (preferably, mainly composed of amorphous silicon), which comprises a porous anodized aluminum film formed by anodically oxidizing a support the surface of which is made of aluminum or aluminum alloy. In the charging member, it is preferred that the pores in the porous anodized aluminum film be filled with a metal or an electrically conductive material made of an oxyacid salt of transition metal or pure water be attached to the inner wall of the pores in the porous anodized aluminum film. The charging member of the present invention may comprise a surface protective layer on the porous anodized aluminum film.
