Plural Diverse Materials Patents (Class 493/330)
  • Patent number: 9039590
Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods are described for providing a bag having an internally reinforced header. A reinforcing material is combined with a bag material to provide strength to the reinforced header. The reinforcing material and the bag material are aligned during manufacturing such that the reinforcing material is positioned in a header area of a bag formed by folding the bag material. A seal that passes through both the reinforcing material and the bag material retains the reinforcing material within the bag header. A bag handle may then be punched into the header through the bag material and the reinforcing material.

  • Publication number: 20140069923
Abstract: A method for preparing a scored flexible structure that has utility in the construction of packaging structures, including steps of: (i) providing a structure as a web of flexible material; (ii) enhancing a thickness of the structure in a discrete region thereof by applying a substantially all-solids electron-beam-curable polymer material in fluid form onto the discrete region, the discrete region occupying a minor percentage of a total surface area of the structure; (iii) curing the polymer material by irradiating the polymer material with an electron beam, thereby forming an EB-cured polymer region; and (iv) forming a score line through a thickness of the EB-cured polymer region and through the thickness of the structure.

  • Publication number: 20130303351
Abstract: Packaging containers (e.g., cups) or protective wraps may be made with two layers of sheet material and an expanded thermal insulation between the layers. The thermal insulation may be made from microencapsulated, heat-expandable particles that are expanded with a microwave heater at some point during processing substrate, building, conveying or packaging the containers. The particles may be applied to blanks formed from die cutting, expanded by heating, and then tampered. The blanks may be outer wraps to a double wall cup, formed by placing and adhering an inner cup to the outer wrap. Alternatively, an adhesive containing the particles are applied to inner cups, which may be adhered to outer wraps to complete formation of the double wall cups. The cups may then be heated with a microwave heater at a subsequent workstation as the cups are conveyed, stacked, placed in bags, the bags in cartons and the cartons stacked and palletized.

  • Publication number: 20120273507
Abstract: Cups that color liquid contents and methods of manufacturing the same are disclosed herein. The cups include an inner wall with a colorant disposed and affixed therein. The colorant is predisposed (i.e., affixed) before the introduction of a liquid, and remains affixed until a liquid is introduced into the cup. The colorant can be disposed within a recess. The colorant can also be affixed to a first cup such that stacking an identical cup within the first cup does not result in the colorant touching the identical cup.

  • Patent number: 6663925
Abstract: The invention is directed to a container press-formed of paperboard having a top surface disposed for contact with material to be contained and an opposed bottom surface, the container comprising a first functional coating material such as a latex dispersed in the paperboard without forming a barrier to moisture. The invention also encompasses a method of manufacturing the press-formed paperboard container comprising before the container is press-formed the step of applying to the bottom surface of the paperboard a moistening solution comprising latex solids in an amount selected to avoid forming a moisture barrier and to avoid blistering on the bottom surface during press forming.

  • Patent number: 6234945
Abstract: A multi-packaging device capable of carrying containers having a range of diameters. The multi-packaging device is constructed from a plastic sheet having an array of apertures arranged in lateral rows and longitudinal ranks. The plastic sheet contains integral segments of a resilient polymer coextruded with respect to the plastic sheet or laminated on the plastic sheet. The plastic sheet may also contain a longitudinally arranged line of weakness under the resilient polymer. The resultant structure enables the multi-packaging device to maintain integrity when a large diameter container is inserted into an aperture because the resilient polymer laminate continues to stretch even after the plastic sheet reaches a stress level approaching neck-down.

  • Patent number: 5383835
Abstract: A gas barrier folding carton formed from a unitary paperboard blank (10) having a gas impermeable polymer layer (52) such as EVOH, nylon, or foil extruded on or laminated to one surface of the blank, except for certain adhesive (56, 58) coated areas. Two opposite side edges of the blank are seamed to form a flattened tube (13) having top and bottom closure flaps (30, 34, 36, 38, 40). One of the major closure flaps (36) at each top and bottom container end is provided with spaced abhesive areas (58), with areas of the two minor closure flaps (34, 38) also provided with abhesive (56). Upon folding the closure flaps at each end, the folding sequence pulls the barrier film (52) away from the abhesive (56, 58) areas and subsequent heat sealing produces hermetic sealing of the carton. This process and carton construction may be employed with conventional gas purging of the container interior by an inert gas before final sealing.
