Abstract: The present invention comprises a novel mattress extension device that can be fixed or that is adjustable for depth and height, which is portable, and capable of conforming the device to the contours of any given mattress and box spring. In preferred embodiments, the various elements of the mattress extender device are each configured to meet the specifications of any or all applications.

Abstract: A bed frame includes a weight bearing framework 30, and a footboard 82 that cooperates with the framework to define an edge 90 of an occupant region 92 of the bed. The footboard 82 includes a footboard frame 100 and a pressurizable cushion 104. A mattress system 160 includes a main occupant support portion 162 with a support surface 168 and a cushion 170 located footwardly of the occupant support portion. The cushion has a deployed state in which it projects vertically higher than the support surface and a stored state in which it does not project vertically higher than the support surface.

Abstract: A mobile diagnostic assembly (20) of the type for supporting a patient in a prone position along an examination surface includes a support frame (22) having a top (26) extending between a front edge (38) and a rear edge (40) and defining at least one opening (48) for receiving pendant breasts of the patient in the prone position. The support frame (22) is movable to a testing position for disposing the rear edge (40) adjacent the examination surface. A flap (50) extends from the rear edge of the top for overlaying an examination surface in the testing position to support the prone patient along the examination surface and said flap and said top to prevent movement of the support frame relative to the examination surface. A pivot (54) is disposed between the flap and the top for establishing rotation of the flap from the testing position to cover said top.

Abstract: A hospital bed includes a base, a lifting mechanism, a rotating frame configured to rotate horizontally relative to the base, and a patient support surface pivotally secured to the rotating frame. The patient support surface includes a back section, a seat section, and foot section that articulate relative to each other. The patient support surface translates from a bed configuration to a side-egress chair configuration. The foot section includes a plurality of panels that translate relative to each other from a substantially co-planar relationship when the patient support surface is in a bed configuration to a relationship where one of the foot section panels is substantially orthogonal to another foot section panel when the patient support surface is in a chair configuration. A mattress supported by the patient support surface has a retractable foot portion that adjusts its length in response to translation of the foot section panels.

Abstract: A support structure for an amputee that has lost his foot is shown. The support structure is adjustable vertically and may be removably attached to the residual limb to support the residual limb when the amputee is in a wheelchair or is sitting upright in a seat or chair. The vertical height is adjusted by a spring-loaded pin and telescopic members. Pads provide cushions for the residual limb.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus is convertible between a bed position, having a generally horizontal sleeping surface upon which a person lies in a supine position, and a chair egress position, allowing a person to exit the support from a sitting position. The patient support comprises a deck, a foot panel coupled to the deck, and an inflatable bladder assembly coupled to the foot panel. The inflatable bladder assembly is coupled to the foot panel and both the foot panel and inflatable bladder assembly are removable from the deck.

Abstract: A variable width bed is provided. In one embodiment the bed has a frame, a deck supported on the frame, and a mattress on the deck. A portion of the mattress on one of head and seat deck sections expands to have an increased width. In an alternate embodiment, deck extender assemblies are provided at the sides of the bed. Each of the deck extender assemblies have supplemental mattresses connected thereto.

Abstract: An adjustable height storage chest with integrated cushioned backrest, which is used to extend the sleeping surface of a bed using connectors to secure it between the bed frame and headboard. Adjustable height is enabled by use of corner mounted legs, which can be positioned at a range of elevations using screw fasteners. The backrest is attached to a frame which is then connected to the chest to create a double-hung door for the chest which allows easy access to the storage area and an adjustable position backrest. Easy use of the backrest is afforded by a soft lift strap with and integrated release pull knob allowing single-handed raising and lowering of the backrest.

Abstract: A bed extension device for use with a conventional bed having a mattress and box springs includes a head support element having a generally planar top portion and a side portion, wherein the top portion includes a hole therein and wherein the side portion is joined to the top portion at a substantially right angle; an insert element having a horizontal portion for insertion between the mattress and the box springs and a vertical portion extending at a substantially right angle therefrom; and a fastener for securing the side portion of the head support element to the vertical portion of the insert element to provide a desired alignment between the upper surface of the mattress and the top portion.

Abstract: A bed extension device for longitudinally or transversely enlarging the sleeping area of a bedding unit which has a mattress and bed frame. The bed extension device comprises an extension frame member which has a forked extension arm extending downward from one end and a frame leg extending downward from the opposite end. The forked extension arm engages a frame lip of the bed frame of the bedding unit, while the frame leg rests upon a floor surface, causing the extension frame member to be positioned parallel to the mattress of the bedding unit. By placing an extension mattress upon the extension frame member, the sleeping area is thus accordingly increased.

Abstract: The mattress joining apparatus comprises a seam protector sized to extend the length of a mattress, and to extend over opposing ends of the mattress. A first mattress strap is secured to one end of the seam protector and a second mattress strap is secured to the opposite end of the seam protector. The first and second mattress straps are each sized to extend across the width of the first and second ends of the adjacent mattresses, and to extend at least halfway along the length of the first and second adjacent mattresses. A first releasable securement means is provided to secure one end of the first mattress strap with one end of the second mattress strap. A second releasable securement means is provided to secure the opposite end of the first mattress strap with the opposite end of the second mattress strap.

Abstract: A side extender assembly for providing additional width to a surgical table. The side extender assembly includes an extender frame having at least one support leg integral therewith. The support leg includes a recess for receiving a side rail of the surgical table, and a tang defining an upper portion of the recess which extends over and behind the side rail in a mounted position. A stud is threadably engaged with the support leg for engaging a lower edge of the side rail to wedge the support leg into firm engagement with the side rail in the mounted position. A thumb screw is threadably engaged with the support leg for contacting the table frame to counteract a moment force applied against the side extender assembly by a patient. The extender frame includes an x-ray passage for permitting an x-ray panel to be inserted through the side extender assembly to a location within a frame of the surgical table.

Abstract: A hospital bed has a frame. A horizontal plate is pivotally mounted on a vertical axis to swing from an inoperative position underlying the frame to an operative position extending from the head end of the bed. A pillow can be placed on the extender so that the patient can be shifted toward the head end of the bed with the patient's head comfortably supported on the pillow which is in turn supported on the extender. A basin is adapted to be used in conjunction with the extender and is a shell having a head receiving cavity with a pedestal projecting upwardly from within the cavity for resting the patient's head thereatop while providing clearance completely around the head so that a care provider can shampoo the patient's head.
