Abstract: Metalworking fluids contain active sulfur, a certain kind of inactive sulfur called “available sulfur”, and fat in a base oil of a lubricating viscosity. The metalworking fluids are chlorine free and phosphorous free. Boundary lubrication is provided by the fat, while extreme pressure lubrication is provided by the sulfur. Available sulfur is inactive sulfur minus any contribution of inactive sulfur from sulfurized saturated fats. Active sulfur and available sulfur are present in balanced proportions, while fat is present at an amount effective to provide boundary lubrication. Use of the fluids reduces tool wear over a long period of action and over a variety of boundary and extreme pressure conditions.

  • Patent number: 5698498
Abstract: This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and (A) a minor amount of at least one hydroxyalkyl dithiocarbamate or at least one borate thereof, wherein the dithiocarbamate is derived from an amine other than an alkyl or alkenylsuccinimide. In another aspect the invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, a hydroxyalkyl dithiocarbamate or a borate thereof, and (B) at least one sulfur compound or (C) at least one phosphorus or boron antiwear or extreme pressure agent. The invention also relates to greases, functional fluids and aqueous fluids containing the hydroxyalkyl dithiocarbamates and borates thereof. The lubricants and fluids have improved antiwear and extreme pressure properties including providing improved antiscuff protection.

  • Patent number: 5698501
Abstract: Sulphur-containing substances are derived from mono- or polyethylenic hydrocarbons by sulphurization using elemental sulphur in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate and in the presence of water and/or at least one alkyleneglycol. The sulphur-containing substances, which may contain 20% to 70% by weight of sulphur, are generally soluble in lubricants to improve antiwear and extreme pressure properties. They can also be used as sulphurization agents, in particular for preparing catalysts for refining petroleum products.

  • Patent number: 5691283
Abstract: In a motor vehicle, especially a heavy duty motor vehicle, having a transmission equipped with at least one cone-type synchronizer and an axle or differential gearing, the same lubricant is used for both such mechanisms. The lubricant has a viscosity grade level of from SAE 75W90 to SAE 85W140 and comprises base oil containing at least (i) Mannich base ashless dispersant; (ii) metal-free, sulphur-containing antiwear and/or extreme pressure agent; (iii) metal-free, phosphorus-containing and nitrogen-containing antiwear and/or extreme pressure agent; and (iv) overbased alkali or alkaline earth metal carboxylate, sulphonate or sulphurized phenate having a TBN of at least 145. The lubricant contains at most, if any, 100 ppm of metal as one or more metal-containing additive components other than (iv).
