Patent number: 6642334Abstract: Described herein is a pentaalkyldisiloxane containing polymeric surfactant prepared by the copolymerization of an alkoxypolyoxyalkylenyl acrylate and an acrylate containing a pentaalkyldisiloxane group. A method for preparing beaded polyethylene glycol-based resins in silicone oil in the presence of a polymeric surfactant containing a pentaalkyldisiloxane group is also described. The average bead size can be controlled by varying the stirring rate, the polymerization temperature, the amount of surfactant, the type of solvent, and the amount of solvent. The surfactant does not interfere with the polymerization and can be removed together with residual silicone oil by a simple washing procedure. The resins can be used, for example, as a support for solid phase organic synthesis, as a chromatographic resin, as a resin for solid phase MAS-NMR spectroscopy, and as a carrier for drug molecules, various reagents, or scavengers.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2001Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: Carlsberg A/SInventors: Morten Grøtli, Morten Peter Meldal

Patent number: 5262171Abstract: A pharmaceutical tablet is provided herein having an effective dissolution rate. The tablet contains a pharmaceutically-active ingredient and a substantially linear, i.e. non-crosslinked K-30 to K-120 PVP as a binding agent. The PVP used herein is made by an initiated polymerization process in which vinyl pyrrolidone monomer is polymerized in the presence of an initiator which produces a linear PVP polymerization, i.e. is a poor hydrogen abstractor of PVP polymer backbones, which would produce a disadvantageous crosslinked PVP product. Suitable initiators include low energy peroxyester free radical initiators, such as t-amylperoxy pivalate, an azo initiator, or a redox initiator which can perform at low temperatures.Preferably the residual initiator level in the PVP is reduced to less than 500 ppm, thereby further precluding the possibility of crosslinking of the PVP polymer during the shelf-life of the tablet.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1991Date of Patent: November 16, 1993Assignee: ISP Investments Inc.Inventors: Robert B. Patent number: 5221722Abstract: Polycarbophil or crosslinked acrylic acid polymer is prepared in a solvent selected from acetone, alkyl acetates, and mixtures thereof, in the presence of an effective amount of divinyl glycol crosslinker, and in the presence of an effective amount of a suitable initiator allowing for polymerization to proceed at a temperature below 100.degree. C. at atmospheric pressure. The polymer produced has average particle size of less than 10 microns without grinding, its viscosity is greater than about 20,000 cPs when measured in water at 1% concentration, and it adheres to mucous membranes. By preparing the polymer in a non-aqueous solvent, the need for aqueous washing is avoided and the subsequent and enormous swelling of the polymer is avoided which means that prolonged and excessive drying inherent in the known processes is avoided.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1992Date of Patent: June 22, 1993Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventor: Eugene J. Sehm

Patent number: 5126381Abstract: A process and apparatus are disclosed for producing polymerized beads containing actives such as perfumes and pesticides, by forming droplets from a solution of monomers and the actives. The solution is subjected to ultraviolet light to initiate polymerization. The droplets are caused to fall through a reaction vessel as polymerization continues so as to polymerize substantially spherical beads containing the actives. In one embodiment, the droplets are irradiated as they fall through the reaction vessel. In a second embodiment, the solution is irradiated prior to droplet formation and the fall. The beads are collected and can be cured if necessary. The process is preferably performed in an inert gas environment which most preferably is nitrogen. A nitrogen stream can serve as a carrier for the monomers and active ingredients. The nitrogen environment is maintained in the reaction vessel, and in the curing structure, if present.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1988Date of Patent: June 30, 1992Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventor: Cristina Liscomb
