  • Patent number: 6789672
Abstract: When packaging a roll product in which a belt-shaped sensitized material has been wound around a core with a light shielding sheet, the packaging apparatus is capable of forming an angle pleated portion of a gather-folded portion which covers a roll end surface with stability, and the package of roll product is capable of retaining the light shielding property and the moisture resistance while making the area of the sheet as small as possible. The gather-folding apparatus forms angle pleated portions on end surface wrapping material by means of both plate-shaped folding members which come into plane contact from outside of the end surface wrapping material and inter support arms which come into line-contact with the inner peripheral surface of the end surface wrapping material. This gather-folding apparatus forms, by means of both the surfaces of the plate-shaped folding members and the line of the inter support arm, two planes of folded planes sandwiching the line concerned.

  • Patent number: 6705060
Abstract: This disclosure describes an apparatus for wrapping all exposed surfaces of a large annular coil, including its hollow cylindrical core, to prevent contamination and to prepare it for shipping. A pair of opposing robotic arms hand off or transfer a roll of wrapping material, such as paper or plastic, from a gripper on one arm to a gripper on the other arm. The arms travel around both ends of the coil, handing off the roll back and forth above the coil and in the center of its hollow core, as it is slowly rotated by a variable-speed coil roller. The speed of the coil roller is adjusted such that the wrap overlaps during each successive pass around the coil, thereby ensuring its sealed integrity. A compact variable-tensioning mechanism, inserted into the roll, maintains constant tension on the wrapping material to keep it taut while being pulled around the coil.

Abstract: A packaging apparatus packages a cylindrical article having a hollow region therein by gathering an end of a wide packaging sheet wrapped around the cylindrical article, and pressing the gathered end into the hollow region in the cylindrical article. The gathered end of the packaging sheet is pressed into the hollow region in the cylindrical article by a presser which has an outside diameter smaller than the diameter of the hollow region and an inside diameter greater than the outside diameter of a core tube used to gather the end of the packaging sheet. The core tube is withdrawn from the hollow region before the gathered end of the packaging sheet is fully pressed into the hollow region by the presser. The packaging apparatus can reliably gather and squeeze a packaging sheet having long opposite ends.

Abstract: A transportation case for a heavy object. A top portion and a mating bottom portion, are proven to be the bottom portion having a lesser height than the top portion to minimize lift-over height into the bottom portion. The bottom portion employs a substantially frusto-conically shaped cushion projecting upwardly therefrom, toward the top portion. The top portion employs a similar frusto-conically shaped cushion projecting downwardly therefrom, toward the bottom portion, the cushions being substantially aligned. The cushions are adapted to be partially inserted into respective apertures in the heavy object, such as, in an aircraft brake assembly. The bottom portion provides for attachment of a removable skid on an exterior surface thereof, the top portion having a corresponding recess for receiving the skid of another transportation case stacked thereon.

  • Patent number: 5983598
Abstract: The method for wrapping a steel coil applies to wrapping a coiled material, particularly sheets of steel, aluminum and other metals which have been wound into a coil, in paper or a polymeric packaging material which contains a volatile corrosion inhibitor for storage or transport. The wrapper includes a cover piece, folded and sealed along one side, leaving two open sides, and a base piece. The base piece is placed on a pallet and the coil is placed on the base with the coil's axis of rotation perpendicular to the pallet. The base is secured to the coil and the coil is secured to the pallet with straps. The cover is placed over the coil with an open side traversing the width of the coil. A first edge of the open side is secured to the coil by adhesive tape, and the second edge is wrapped around the coil to overlap the first edge and also secured by tape. The two peaked corners of the cover are folded down over the top of the cover and secured by adhesive tape.

Abstract: Single station apparatus and processing procedures for packaging production-tonnage coils of flat-rolled sheet metal so as to provide protection from (i) packaged atmosphere, (ii) ambient atmosphere, and (iii) changing ambient atmospheric conditions. Such coil is positioned centrally of such single station apparatus for integrated polymeric stretch-film encapsulation of such wound coil and for securing such coil to a pallet. A centrally-located support of such structure enables pivotal circumscribing movement of a power-driven source of polymeric stretch-film with provisions for control of stretch-film tension. A pallet-mounted sheet metal coil, with its central axis vertically-oriented and with bottom and top planar surfaces protected, is circumferentially wound free of any requirement for movement of pallet or coil so as to encapsulate such coil, in effect, providing hermetic sealing of the coil. And the encapsulated coil is affixed to such pallet by continuous-length polymeric stretch-film wrapping.

  • Patent number: 5894708
Abstract: Disclosed is a compressed core-wound paper product such as toilet tissue or paper towels. The core-wound paper product comprises a paper product wound about a generally tubular core. The core-wound paper product is compressed, so that the core is flattened to form vertices. By selecting the proper combination of core materials and thickness, to form a core of the proper stiffness; paper product caliper and quantity, to provide hoop forces against the core which are not too great; and total packaging dimensions, so that the core-wound paper product is not too tightly constrained, the core-wound paper product may be made to open to an inside core dimension of about 0.16 centimeters (0.06 inches) to about 1.27 centimeters (0.5 inches). The invention may be utilized with either single roll or multiple roll packages.

Abstract: A method for wrapping coiled material which includes the selection of a tear-resistant bag having openings at either end and drawstrings near each opening. A roll of steel is lifted, e.g., by a forklift, and the bag is slipped over the roll of steel. The excess material of the bag is then folded over so that the bag tightly fits the steel roll. The strings are then drawn tightly, pulling the bag radially over the steel roll such that the ends of the bag overlaps the aperture of the core of the roll. The overlapping portions of the bag are folded inside of the core of the coiled material and inner diameter protectors are placed in the core to secure the bag.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for wrapping coils of metallic strip and the like to protect against atmospheric corrosion are described. A plastic film sleeve is inserted through the open cylindrical centre and held in place by flanged collars at each end. The sleeve is turned back over the collars and the ends are loosely stuffed into the open cylindrical centre. The entire coil is then cocoon wrapped using relatively wide stretch-wrap film. The cocoon wrapping is then sealed to the turned-over sleeve in the vicinity of the end collars so as to seal the coil within a continuous plastic film. The excess cocoon wrapping and sleeve material overlying the cylindrical centre can be trimmed away to leave an open centre to receive coil handling equipment.
