    Abstract: Intermittently colored yarns having an intermittent and random dye spacing pattern, and systems and methods of making the same, are disclosed. Such intermittently colored yarns exhibit higher quality and lower manufacturing costs over the known intermittently colored yarns. The intermittent coloring takes place while the yarn is in caterpillar form. Carpets made from such intermittently colored yarns exhibit enhanced aesthetics over carpets made from known intermittently colored yarns. Alternatively, a stain resist, colorless base dye, or bleaching agent can be applied in the same intermittent and random spacing pattern to the intermittently colored yarns prior to subsequent dyeing. This creates a mirror image like color effect to the resulting yarn.

When the bulked yarn with a length of 100 cm is hung down in a state where both ends of the yarn are fixed at a distance of 10 cm from each other in a direction perpendicular to the direction of gravitational force, twisting does not occur or an average value of the distances from the uppermost end of a twisting section to the first and second fixed ends of the yarn is 30 cm or more. The bulked yarn has excellent texture, lightweight properties, and anti-pilling properties, as well as excellent weaving and knitting properties and productivity.

    Abstract: A permanently flame-retardant and anti-microbial air-textured yarn is formed of a plurality of substantially longitudinally extending, permanently flame-retardant filaments defining a core, and a plurality of substantially randomly extending, permanently anti-microbial filaments disposed at least about the core, the anti-microbial filaments at least partially defining a boucle-like sheath about the core. A knit or woven fabric formed with the yarn and having at lease 5% by weight of the anti-microbial filaments is characterized by an ability to pass, both after one commercial laundering and after 100 commercial launderings, both National Fire Protection Agency vertical flame retardancy test NFPA 701-1989 and at least the 85% reduction level of gram positive and gram negative bacteria of anti-microbial test NYS 63.

    Abstract: A textured, continuous, multi-filament polyester yarn has an ethoxylated alkyl aryl alcohol based surfactant incorporated into the interfilamentary structure thereof either during the texturizing process or after the yarn has been made into a gauze-like fabric substrate. The ethoxylated alkyl aryl alcohol based surfactant is characterized in that it is water dispersible and water insoluble; has an HLB scale in the range of 7-10; is compatible with conventional wallpaper glues; is of a viscosity in the range of 50-100 SUS depending on the yarn denier; and has a smoke point greater than 350.degree. F. The yarn so treated is formed into a gauze fabric substrate and affixed to the rear surface of a sheet material such as a vinyl wallcovering. When the glue is applied to the sheet material the surfactant treatment alters the normally hydrophobic characteristics exhibited by the textured polyester yarn so that the characteristics actually become hydrophilic.

Each strand of the roving has a multiplicity of rather long, axially extending loops, for example, axially extending loops with a calculated length of at least 6 inches, and a multiplicity of shorter, unbroken, cross-axially extending loops that are formed in the axially extending loops of such strands. The axially extending loops and the cross-axially extending loops interengage and intertwine with one another to form a composite entangled structure. The roving of the present invention is made by a process that uses a finger wheel to form axially extending loops in strands and a spinner downstream of the finger wheel.
