  • Patent number: 7958980
Abstract: A conventional solid protection device disposed on an exposed side of a cylinder for actuating a working device had a possibility of being permanently deformed by contacting an obstacle so as to be prevented from sliding properly corresponding to the telescopic movement of the hydraulic cylinder. An object of the invention is to provide a hardly deformable protection device. To protect an exposed side of a cylinder for a working device, a protection device includes a guard member and a slide guide into which guard member is telescopically fitted. Slide guide is attached to a cylinder tube, and a tip of guard member is attached to a tip of piston rod. Guard member is a flat plate made of spring steel. A width of guard member is larger than a diameter of the piston rod. Notches are provided on lateral opposite sides of a basic side end of guard member. Sliders are fitted to respective notches. The top of guard member is bent into a roll-shape so as to serve as a pivotal portion.

  • Patent number: 5560290
Abstract: A safety apparatus is mounted to the side of a bed of a power press machine on which an operator is positioned for ensuring safety of the operator of the power press machine. The safety apparatus includes a table, for supporting the front end portion of a workpiece, fitted so as to be movable toward and away from the bed at substantially the same height as a fixed mold set to the bed side and on the side of the bed where the operator is positioned. A pair of two-hand operation type switches are fitted to the front side portion of the table with a gap between them, and are operated by both hands of the operator. A deactivating switch is provided for deactivating the pair of two-hand operation type switches when a movable mold set to slide portion side of the power press machine approaches to within predetermined distance of the fixed mold set to the bed side to provide a safety state.

  • Patent number: 5560466
Abstract: A safety guard system provided for a machine having a ram which is movable toward and away from a work zone and an actuator which is operable for driving the ram through a ram stroke toward the work zone. The safety guard system includes a safety guard mounted for movement along a guard path between open and closed positions with respect to the work zone. The safety guard is releasably coupled to the ram for movement during the ram stroke from the open to the closed position before completion of the ram stroke, and the safety guard is arranged to decouple from the ram upon either one of reaching the closed position or earlier encountering an obstruction in the guard path. A guard sensor effects a first signal upon the safety guard reaching the closed position, and an object sensor effects a second signal upon decoupling of the safety guard from the ram.

  • Patent number: 5400677
Abstract: A shield for an engraving machine or the like is disclosed that prevents the machine operator from placing his or her fingers in the work area of the machine while the ram of the machine is traveling toward the work area. The shield includes a faceplate that is attached to a slide and slide holder configuration. The slide holder is attached to the machine, while the slide is adapted to travel with the slide holder. A plunger holder is affixed to the ram, while a plunger is spring loaded to travel within the plunger holder. As the ram travels upward away from the work area, a protrusion on the plunger interacts with the slide to force the slide and faceplate in an upward direction as well, thereby clearing the work area and allowing access thereto by the machine operator. The faceplate moves upward in unison with the ram until the plunger interfaces with the slide holder, at which time the plunger disengages from the slide.

  • Patent number: 4321841
Abstract: The specification discloses a safety device for presses and other similar machines in which stock material is manually inserted between converging machine parts. A ram and sleeve arrangement cooperates with a collar mounted on the moving portion of the machine to insure that the operator's hands are drawn completely back to the safety position prior to the commencement of the machine stroke. In the event that the ram does not operate at the commencement of the press cycle, the collar abuts the sleeve on the downward stroke of the press, and moves the pull-back mechanism therewith to the safety position.

  • Patent number: 4220032
Abstract: A reciprocating preferably transparent break guard is disclosed for use in connection with a reciprocating machine, such as a bending machine. Adjustable switching means are operatively associated with the machine for controlling the actuation of a hydraulic piston connected to a frame for the guard. When the machine is in its upper position for receiving a workpiece, the switching means causes the piston to be actuated to maintain the guard in its upper position free from interference with the break. When the machine is actuated and starts its downward stroke, the switching means actuates a solenoid to release the piston causing the guard to drop smartly in front of the break thereby preventing the operator from accidentally inserting hands or fingers into the break of the machine. In its lowered position, the machine again actuates the switching means to operate the piston to raise the guard to its upper position.

  • Patent number: 4080846
Abstract: This invention provides a safety guard for pressing apparatus such as a brake press, in which shield plates are positively and securely maintained in the "guard" position adjacent the usual ram of the brake press. Upon descent of the ram, an interlocking tooth arrangement which is instrumental in holding the shield plates in the "guard" position is disconnected, and a swing lever is pivoted about a point fixed with respect to the frame of the brake press, at the same time raising the shield plates to allow for the bending sheet metal to "whip" upwardly during the bending. The interlocking tooth arrangement consists of one tooth on the lever and another tooth on a dog member which is mounted for pivotal motion with respect to the frame of the brake press. A contact portion is adapted to descend along with the ram, and a contact portion first cams the dog member out of the way, and then presses against the lever to rotate the same and thus lift the shield.

  • Patent number: 4033250
Abstract: A pneumatically buffered drive system is provided which quickly moves a movable member, such as a press safety curtain or press bolster, a predetermined length in three sequential speed stages to prevent maximum acceleration from occurring at the end of the predetermined length. The movable member is coupled to a differential pressure piston which is initially pressurized on only one side of the piston to initiate movement. After traversing approximately half the predetermined length both sides of the piston are pressurized to decelerate the piston during the member movement for approximately the next third of the predetermined length. The remaining length is traversed with the decelerating pressure being vented to positively finish the motion along the predetermined path. In vertical moving members having significant mass such as press safety curtains, a higher pressure is used to decelerate the piston than the pressure used to drive the piston.
