Abstract: In an improvement to a pipe re-facing machine having a rotatable flange plate and a coaxially-mounted collar rotatable with and longitudinally movable relative to the flange plate, a support bracket projects from the flange plate, and a support block is retainingly mounted to and movable relative to the support bracket in an angled radial direction. The support block is adapted to receive a tool holder carrying a cutting element. An actuating mechanism is engageable with the support block such that longitudinal movement of the collar will move the support block relative to the support bracket. The actuating mechanism can thus move the cutting element in an angled direction relative to the axis of a tubular workpiece, thereby enabling machining of a bevelled edge on an annular shoulder of a tubular workpiece non-rotatably mounted to the re-facing machine by longitudinally moving the collar while rotating the flange plate.

Abstract: A process by which nanostructured monolithic bodies can be produced in a single continuous operation, as opposed to multi-stage deformation processing. The process generally entails continuously producing a chip having a nanostructured microstructure by engaging a solid body with a cutting edge of a tool while the solid body and the cutting edge move relative to each other, and simultaneously extruding the chip in the immediate vicinity of the cutting edge, such as with a constraining member, as the chip is separated from the solid body by the cutting edge to continuously plastically deform the chip and produce a nanostructured monolithic body immediately downstream of the cutting edge. The shape and size of the chip can be simultaneously controlled by the extrusion process so that the nanostructured monolithic body has a predetermined geometry. The device is designed to fit on a commercial diamond turning machine and can adjust the cutting tool position in three orthogonal directions with sub-micrometer resolution. In particular, the tool holder adjusts the tool position using three flexure-based mechanisms, with two flexure mechanisms adjusting the lateral position of the tool to align the tool with the B-axis, and a third flexure mechanism adjusting the height of the tool. Preferably, the flexures are driven by manual micrometer adjusters. In this manner, this tool holder simplifies the process of setting a tool with sub-?m accuracy, to substantially reduce the time required to set the tool.

  • Patent number: 6862967
Abstract: The invention is a new boring unit for complex parts, including a fixing pin, suitable for holding the piece in its hole, and two concentric cylinders coaxial with the pin that are set rotating in the same direction by two electric motors. The inner cylinder is provided, at its end facing the grip of the pin, with a conical toothing, and the outer cylinder is provided, at its end facing the grip of the pin, with a tool-holder with radial translation mechanisms of the tools and a bevel gear wheel meshing with the conical toothing of the inner cylinder and connected with the radial translation mechanism of the tools. The radial translation of the tools is obtained by rotating the cylinders at different speeds by means of the electric motors, that is, by generating a relative motion between them.

Abstract: An end prep tool is mounted in substantial alignment with a theoretical center of a pipe and used to prepare an end of a pipe, for example, by boring and/or cutting the end of the pipe. A tool centering and mounting system comprises a clamp cage and a tool mounting member having an inner cylindrical surface. A centering tool is mounted to the tool mounting member and used to adjust the tool mounting member until substantially aligned with the theoretical center of the pipe. The end prep tool comprises a tool feed assembly that moves a cutting tool radially with respect to the axis of rotation and axially according to a predefined cutting profile.

  • Publication number: 20040187657
Abstract: An apparatus for reconditioning the surface of a workpiece. The frame of the apparatus includes a first portion that is frictionally engaged to the outside diameter of the workpiece and a second portion that rotates relative to the first portion. A cutting tool is mounted to the rotating portion of the frame, and in addition to providing for the alignment of the frame with the workpiece, the present invention provides for the squaring up of the frame with the surface of the workpiece that is to be reconditioned so that the cutting tool will provide a flat, finished surface that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. Also provided is a mount for the cutting tool that facilitates fast replacement of the cutting tool while still allowing precise positioning of the cutting tool and minimizing any relative movement between the cutting tool and the mount.

  • Patent number: 6655246
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved machine tool, comprising a machine frame, a support arranged on the machine frame and having a first receiving means for the workpiece or the tool. A cross slide system is arranged on the machine frame and has a second receiving means for the tool or the workpiece which can be moved by the cross slide system in a movement zone of a cross slide movement surface. The cross slide system may comprise two slide elements, one of which is supported on the machine frame and the other bears the second receiving means, such that the slide elements are guided so as to be movable on one another by a single two-dimensional guide means which is movable in the direction of both cross slide movement axes. The guide means determines the precision of the guidance of the second receiving means parallel to the cross slide movement surface.

Abstract: The present invention provides a pipe cutter apparatus that includes a housing having a base and lid. The lid is moveable between a storage position and an operative position. A motor is retained within the housing and has a shaft operatively connected thereto and rotated thereby. A cutting wheel extends radially from the shaft and is rotated with the shaft. A pipe conveyor is also retained within the housing, adjacent the cutting wheel. The pipe conveyor may be operated to urge a pipe placed therein into engagement with the cutting wheel. The pipe conveyor is preferably adjustable to receive pipes of various diameters. Notably, when the lid is in the operative position, a work area is provided for cutting a pipe or similar work piece. When the lid is in the storage position, a carrying case is provided such that the pipe cutter apparatus is readily portable. A cleaning brush also extends from the shaft that is rotated by the motor.

  • Patent number: 6568303
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting rings from ring forgings of titanium or related materials is described. The ring forging is gripped and rotated about its centerline in a centering chuck. A tool holder is mounted parallel to and spaced from the centerline of the forging. The displacement of the tool holder is controlled both along and perpendicular to the centerline. First and second cutter bars having first and second cutter bits are mounted to the tool holder. The first cutter bar is mounted so that it may be moved along a diameter of the ring forging with the second cutter bar moving along a line parallel to, coplanar with and spaced from this diameter. The second cutter bit is wider than the first cutter bit. The second cutter bit widens the cut made by the first cutter bit, thereby providing chip clearance and cooling for the ring being cut.

  • Patent number: 6341547
Abstract: A lathe includes a frame for supporting rotatable chucking equipment adapted to hold a work piece. The frame further supports at least one lathe tool for machining the work piece. The chucking equipment and the lathe tool are displaceable relative to each other in at least a radial direction. The lathe includes a housing attached to the frame, with the housing extending about a longitudinal axis and having a cylindrical inner space extending from one end of the housing. The inner space has a longitudinal axis parallel to, though offset from, the longitudinal axis of the housing. An angularly displaceable shaft is arranged in the inner space and carries the chucking equipment. A rotatable outer casing peripherally encloses the cylindrical elongate housing. The rotatable outer casing carries the lathe tool. Rotation of the rotatable outer casing causes the lathe tool to effect a radial displacement relative to the chucking equipment.

  • Patent number: 6327946
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a mechanical seal used in fluid applications, wherein the mechanical seal is comprised of a sintered (cemented) tungsten carbide ring that is turned on a lathe at a negative top rake angle instead of formed by grinding. The cemented tungsten carbide ring is initially prepared by rounding corners of the top surface to form a radii. The resulting mechanical seal yields significantly less surface damage, can be formed using faster cutting speeds and feeds than when grinding, enables formation of a greater range of complex geometries for the mechanical seals, and requires fewer passes than grinding. The compact is also formed at a significantly reduced cost as compared to grinding.
