  • Patent number: 8359956
Abstract: A rose engine apparatus is disclosed for attaching to a lathe having a lathe bed and a headstock with a rotatable spindle. The apparatus includes a pivotal attaching means for pivotally attaching the headstock with the lathe bed. At least one cam is selectively fixable to a cam attachment means fixed to the spindle of the headstock, each cam having a continuous, variable radius along a peripheral edge thereof. A cam roller is fixed with the lathe bed so as to make contact with the peripheral edge of a selected cam. A biasing spring urges the selected cam against the roller means, such that the headstock pivots with respect to the lathe bed as a function of the variable radius of the selected cam, as the spindle and workpiece rotates. As such, cutting operations can be performed on the workpiece that correspond to the variable radius of the selected cam. The apparatus may be bypassed to allow conventional operation of the lathe without removing the apparatus therefrom.

Abstract: In an improvement to a pipe re-facing machine having a rotatable flange plate and a coaxially-mounted collar rotatable with and longitudinally movable relative to the flange plate, a support bracket projects from the flange plate, and a support block is retainingly mounted to and movable relative to the support bracket in an angled radial direction. The support block is adapted to receive a tool holder carrying a cutting element. An actuating mechanism is engageable with the support block such that longitudinal movement of the collar will move the support block relative to the support bracket. The actuating mechanism can thus move the cutting element in an angled direction relative to the axis of a tubular workpiece, thereby enabling machining of a bevelled edge on an annular shoulder of a tubular workpiece non-rotatably mounted to the re-facing machine by longitudinally moving the collar while rotating the flange plate.

  • Patent number: 6062778
Abstract: A cutting tool insert is mounted on a flexure member that is mounted on the end of a boring bar. The construction of the flexure member is such that it is compliant along a radial axis perpendicular to the direction of tool advancement, but relatively stiff along a feed axis in the direction of tool feed, and along a cutting axis in the direction of tool rotation. Any displacement of the flexure member and cutting tool insert as a result of workpiece engagement or boring bar deflection is sensed by laser detectors. Signals from the laser detectors are coupled to a computer that rotates with the boring bar and are used to provide feedback signals to an actuator in contact with the flexure member. The actuator displaces the flexure member to correct the position of the tool insert.

Abstract: The fabrication of an off axis three-mirror telescope on only two substrates allowing two of mirrors to be formed on a common substrate, such as by means of diamond turning. The common substrate configuration is made possible by utilizing a common vertex for both the primary and tertiary mirrors so that alignment subsequent to fabrication requires placement of only two elements. In addition, all three mirrors in this invention share a common optical axis enabling an extremely simple mounting and housing design. The present invention is applicable for use in electro-optical imaging sensors operating from visible wavelengths to long infrared wavelengths. Abstract: The present invention solves the problems encountered by conventional machine tool devices when metals, plastics, composites or other materials are cut. The Sizing Tool is capable of precisely and permanently changing the shape of a tubular workpiece because, unlike conventional static spreaders, it repeatedly bends the workpiece back and forth many times to achieve the desired deformation. The Sizing Tool includes a set of revolving rollers (14) supported by bearings (13) and a mounting plate (12). The roller (14) is capable of engaging either the inside or outside surface of a hollow metal tube (10). The rollers (14) exert force on the end of the tube (10) having a circular cross-section in a configuration that resembles a polygon inscribed in a circle. As the rollers (14) are moved toward the workpiece (10), the workpiece is gradually deformed as it moves farther into the inclined surface presented by each roller (14).

  • Patent number: 4411324
Abstract: A bore undercutting tool which is composed of a barrel and a cutter feed driver which is inserted for longitudinal displacement but also for co-rotation into the barrel and projects from the rearward end thereof. In a slot provided in the forward end portion of the barrel there is fulcrumed a cutter in the form of a two-armed lever which can be rocked by a cutter feed cam provided on the forward end of the cutter feed driver, in proportion to the longitudinal displacement of the latter relative to the barrel, such that a cutting tool disposed on the one lever arm can either be retracted into the slot or rocked out of same. A spring biases the barrel and the cutter feed driver toward a position in which the cutting tool is withdrawn into the slot.

  • Patent number: 4151765
Abstract: Matching tapered surfaces are cut on male and female parts to be interfitted along the tapered surfaces by utilizing a lathe, having a motor driven tail stock opposite a conventional head stock, with the tail stock being mounted relative to the bed of the lathe for adjustable movement to position the tail stock at a desired taper angle relative to the longitudinal centerline of the lathe. The tail stock is equipped with a "direct mounting" chuck having jaws for holding the parts during the taper cutting operation. In one operation, the male part, which is hollow, is gripped internally thereof by the tail stock chuck, and the taper is cut on the external surface of the part by movement of the cutting tool in a horizontal plane parallel to the centerline of the lathe. Since the tail stock has been preset at the desired tapered angle, the external surface of the male part will be cut with the desired taper.
