    Abstract: A telescoping hydraulic hoist formed from a non-corrosive material provides bearings and hydraulic seals about the bottom portion of each intermediate moving stage. The bearings and hydraulic seals are thus always maintained within the hoist and are not exposed to dust or particulate matter from outside the hoist. Air flows into and out of the air spaces between adjacent stages through air breathers. The hoist may also include variable length stroke limiters, and a cushion member which partially closes off the hydraulic inlet as the innermost stage is fully retracted to slow the hoist motion in the final stages of retraction.

    Abstract: A self-bleeding multi-stage or single-stage hydraulic cylinder system is disclosed which automatically bleeds entrapped air from within the cylinder each time the cylinder is cycled. The self-bleeding structure preferably includes a fixed elongated tube mounted to the base plate of the cylinder, and an axially moveable elongated tube telescopically mounted on the fixed tube. A biasing compression spring forces the moveable tube upward to a predetermined extent when the cylinder is extended. Upon contraction of the cylinder, air trapped therein is purged or bled from the cylinder through the top end of the axially moveable elongated tube into a fluid reservoir. In the final stage of contraction of the cylinder, hydraulic fluid is forced through the fixed and moveable elongated tubes thereby forcing the remaining air trapped therein out of the cylinder and into the hydraulic fluid reservoir.

The outer wall of the cylinder has a smooth wall with a circular cross section concentric with the inner bore of the cylinder. The outer sleeve has a smooth inner bore with a circular cross section concentric with the cylinder. The outer sleeve is arranged to slide along the outer wall of the cylinder to provide a sliding linear bearing that resists lateral loads that would otherwise be taken up by the piston and piston rod at their contacts with the cylinder. The sleeve distributes the lateral load over a greater surface area and supports the forces with a stronger structure than conventional assemblies. The sleeve, cylinder and piston have concentric circular cross sections to permit rotation about the central axis without binding. The sleeve has a lubricous plastic lining to enhance sliding contact with the outer wall of the cylinder.

A first hydraulic cavity is provided between an outer piston and the housing, while a second hydraulic cavity, communicating with a source requesting the application of brake force, communicates with both pistons. Passages in the outer piston allow the two cavities to communicate with each other. As the associated brake disc stack wears, the outer piston progressively extends from the housing as the passages are exposed by the inner piston. The actual brake force is attained by the inner piston alone.
