Patent number: 5592905Abstract: An electromechanical variable valve actuator for selectively opening and closing an intake or exhaust valve in an internal combustion engine having a valve closure member and a valve seat which employs Lorentz forces by using a current carrying conductive armature coil which is connected to the valve closure member and placed in a fixed air gap and movable in a direction perpendicular to a magnetic field generated by a magnetic field generator and directed across the air gap. The electromagnetic vector force, know as the Lorentz force, exerted on the armature coil results from the cross product of the current and the magnetic field.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1996Date of Patent: January 14, 1997Assignee: Machine Research Corporation of ChicagoInventor: Joseph Born

Patent number: 5579697Abstract: An improved gap sealing device for covering the gaps between horizontally extending and vertically spaced apart sidewall panels on auto rack railroad cars and between sidewall panels and supporting members. The gap sealing device is a single piece of extruded plastic having a head attachable to a flange of a sidewall panel and a tail or flap for biasing against the vertically adjacent sidewall panel, and a body that covers the gap to prevent air passage. The head includes inside and outside walls where the inside wall is hingedly attached to the outside wall by a live hinge and movable between open and closed positions to facilitate attachment of the head to the flange of the sidewall panel. A spring clip is placed over the inside and outside walls of the head to maintain and lock the gap sealing device on the flange of the sidewall panel. The gap sealing device may also be used to close the gaps between the sidewall panels and the roof, the floor, and vertical posts of the auto rack railroad car.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1995Date of Patent: December 3, 1996Assignee: Zeftek, Inc.Inventor: Michael K. Burke

Patent number: 5486005Abstract: A method and apparatus for playing a poker-like game with a deck of fifty-two playing cards wherein each player plays against the dealer. After each player makes a wager, the dealer deals four initial cards of the deck face up to seven separate hands, places odds on each hand according to predetermined guidelines, and selects two of the seven hands as a combination field position. Each player then selects either one of the hands, the field position, or a no-hand winning position which requires that none of the seven hands, after all cards are dealt, have two pairs or better. After each player selects a hand or a position, the dealer deals three more cards of the deck face up to each of the seven separate hands. The dealer then determines the winning hand or position and pays each player who selected the winning hand or position according to the odds and their wager or collects each player's wager who did not select the winning hand or position.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1995Date of Patent: January 23, 1996Assignee: Judith Neal, ExecutrixInventor: Michael D. Patent number: 5484250Abstract: A coupling for a heavy-duty machine to be used between a boom and a stick having a working tool for quick coupling and decoupling of the stick to the boom for the exchange of tools and being operable from the cab or operator's station on the machine without requiring the need for one or more persons or machines at the coupling during the coupling and decoupling process. The coupling also includes a unique locking mechanism that can be remotely controlled to lock and unlock the coupling when they are in mating engagement. The coupling includes a male member attachable to the boom of the machine and a female member connected to the stick. The male member is pivotally mounted at one end on the boom and connected at the other end to a hydraulic cylinder on the boom for articulating the male member on the boom. Patent number: 5421887Abstract: A method and apparatus for sequentially applying a predetermined amount of adhesive to a series of sheets of insulation having a frame with a conveyor mounted at one end, a magazine adapted to maintain and dispense sheets of insulation, one at a time onto the conveyor, a floating adhesive dispensing hopper is positioned adjacent to the conveyor, and a sheet stopping mechanism located on the other side of the hopper at the opposite end of the frame. In operation, a plurality of sheets of insulation are loaded into the magazine, dispensed onto the conveyor one at a time, then driven by the conveyer under the floating adhesive dispensing hopper which applies adhesive to the entire width of the sheet of insulation as the sheet passes under the hopper. The stopping mechanism beyond the hopper stops the movement of the sheet of insulation by deactivating the conveyor until the sheet with the adhesive applied thereon is removed.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1993Date of Patent: June 6, 1995Inventor: Karl Guddal
