  • Patent number: 7630711
Abstract: A wireless communications device is configurable to communicate with either one of two networks over a wireless medium, each of the two networks having a different air interface protocol. Additionally, the wireless device includes stored provisioning information for a set of networks of a first type and can map this first provisioning information into a second format for use with networks of a second type. The device also includes a non-volatile memory for storing default provisioning information so that some information remains available regardless of what is erased from the memory. The default provisioning information is enough to establish a connection over one of the available networks and allow reconstruction of a provisioning list.

  • Patent number: 7301990
Abstract: Techniques for performing equalization of multiple signals received by a terminal in soft handoff with multiple base stations. The received signal at the terminal is conditioned and digitized to provide a stream of received samples, which is then equalized/filtered with multiple sets of coefficients to provide multiple streams of transmit chip estimates. One set of coefficients is provided for each base station and is used to provide a corresponding stream of transmit chip estimates. The multiple streams of transmit chip estimates are further processed to provide multiple streams of data symbol estimates, one stream of data symbol estimates for each base station. The multiple streams of data symbol estimates are then scaled with multiple scaling factors and combined to provide a stream of combined data symbol estimates. The processing for the multiple base stations may be performed by a single hardware unit in a time division multiplexed manner.

  • Patent number: 7236554
Abstract: A timing estimation system and methodology are provided. In particular, a first pilot is employed in conjunction with three acquisition stages. In the first stage, an attempt is made to observe the leading edge of the correlation curve associated with the first pilot symbol. In the second stage, a determination is made to confirm a leading edge was detected in the first stage by attempting to observe a trailing edge of the correlation curve. Furthermore, during this second stage, a frequency loop is updated to account for frequency offset. The third stage is for observing the trailing edge of the curve if it was not already observed in stage two. Upon detection of receipt of the first pilot, a second pilot can subsequently be employed to acquire fine symbol timing.

  • Patent number: 7054628
Abstract: A method of using a ciphering key in a mobile station (18) from a first base station (12) in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control (10) station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises generating for the mobile station a cipher key for use by the mobile station during communication in the second cellular communications system. The cipher key is generated by the mobile station from a private key assigned to the mobile station for the second cellular communications system and from a random number generated by the second cellular communications system. The cipher key is then communicated to the first mobile system and a private long code is generated for use by the mobile station during communication in the first cellular communications system.

  • Patent number: 6788488
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a variable mode multi-media data object storage device. Large digital objects can be quickly downloaded in approximately a minute. The digital objects can be utilized or played back at real-time speeds. Utilization or playback consumes minimal power, allowing the disk to support portable devices operating on battery power. The storage device uses multiple disk rotation speeds to support multiple modes of operation. The storage device operates in at least two modes of disk drive operation, supporting a fast platter rotation speed for writing and a slower platter rotation speed for reading. The multiple rotation speeds operate in conjunction with a head assembly configured with at least one head for reading and multiple heads for writing. When writing, the disk spins at the faster rotation speed. When in utilization or playback mode, the disk spins at the slower, power conserving rotation speed.

  • Patent number: 6741661
Abstract: A method and system that reduces the peak-to-average power ratio of a reverse link signal is described. A baseband structure implements a peak reduction technique using peak windowing. A non-rectangular window is used to distort the signal. One embodiment of the window is an inverted-raised cosine with the peak reduction a function of the relative difference in the squared-magnitude of the envelope relative to that of the desired peak-to-average power ratio. Multiple passes through the peak-reduction function may be performed until a desired target peak-to-average power ratio is achieved.

  • Patent number: 6298051
Abstract: A novel and improved method for implementing a high-transmission-rate over-the-air interface is described. A transmit system provides an in-phase channel set and a quadrature-phase channel set. The in-phase channel set is used to provide a complete set of orthogonal medium rate control and traffic channels. The quadrature-phase channel set is used to provide a high-rate supplemental channel and an extended set of medium rate channels that are orthogonal to each other and the original medium rate channels. The high-rate supplemental channel is generated over a set of medium rate channels using a short channel code. The medium rate channel are generated using a set of long channel codes.

  • Patent number: 6252865
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the transmission of signals from one or more of a plurality of mobile stations to a base station on a plurality of M multiple access channels. A power control information packet formed from a plurality of power control bits is transmitted from the base station to the one or more mobile stations. Each of the power control bits in the power control information packet has a position that is mapped to a selected access channel and to a time offset within the selected access channel. The power control information packet is received at a first mobile station. A message is then transmitted from the first mobile station to the base station on a first access channel and at a first time offset associated with the first access channel. The message is transmitted from the first mobile station at a power level determined in response to a first power control bit in the power control information packet.
